Over-Time vs Tv-Nihon: Which one do you prefer?

I agree with LukaMilfy about DDLs and a download manager.

It obviously depends on what kind of speeds you can get from different sources but for me, JDownloader+Megaupload is the quickest and most convenient way to download batches of episodes.

As far as encodes go, it all depends on the encoders. It can also effect the size vs quality ratio quite a bit. OT, for example, has HD softsubs that in the beginning, were really big, around 500mb average, but looked really good. But as time went on, they've learned to reduce it and now its around 300-400 for HD and it looks amazing. Even their SD eps look as good if not better than TVN's HD eps. So it definitely lies in the encoder.

AVI format is mostly a thing of the past for shows now. Even old shows like Gavan are being subbed using MKV and they look great.

and as far as download managers go, Mipony (nothing to do with MLP, thank god), is a really good program. you can download multiple files, group them into folders, and even attach passwords to the ones that are locked, so you dont have to come back when a new download starts to enter anything. only ones you need to do that for are captcha's.

Me too. I like that the text are colour-coded in sentai when they're transformed.

I firmly stand by this... Those people that think you need fancy colors and fancy karaoke in a fansub care less about the actual sub, and more about the colors and fancy karaoke. Meaning you don't care how bad a sub is, you just want fancy colors and effects. I know there are a few exceptions to this, but I think most people that say they love colors and effects just don't care about sub quality over all.

Anyways, I suspect that the difference in quality between the two groups has been, and is continuing to be, overhyped. Can anyone provide clear examples/comparisons? Not just 'they leave proper nouns and common words untranslated' please. Stuff where TVN's translation has been 'wrong' or 'bad' and OT's 'right'.

I think the subbers on both teams work hard to produce clear and understandable fansubs and but it's annoying to see that there's still unnecessary conflict surrounding them. People can (and should be encouraged to) choose OT based on its own merits.

T-N does not produce clear and understandable subs. When you leave that much Japanese in a SUB.. .That is not clear and understandable. I would think this point is common sense. And there have been MANY MANY examples given in many places. I once tried to get takenoko to stop using so much Japanese in an English sub, and here I am today. Got forced out of the group by him. Good times.

If I am able to choose between the two, I definitely go with Over-Time. I just prefer the plain, bare bones style of subbing. I've seen a few mispellings here and there in their work, but I figure no fansub is going to be perfect. The main (and only) advantage of TV-Nihon subs for me is that the newer stuff is encoded to play on Playstation 3. It saves a bit of hassle trying to watch it on my HDTV, but that's about it.

I was really into TV-Nihon a long time back and I have an appreciation for the old guard. Regardless of how ugly things may have got between TV-Nihon and the community back then, it was still their subs of Blade and Dekaranger that opened an entire world of awesome shows to me. As a group TV-Nihon has changed a lot and is far different from where it once was, for better or worse. I'm not really into them anymore.

If I have to fall back on TV-Nihon subs I will (like with an older show), but I go with Over-Time for current stuff.

I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say I don't fully support either because while both have their pros and cons, both make the same stupid, stupid, stupid mistakes that I can't forgive

TV-N has nice fonts and effects as well as having a good instinct for when to leave a word untranslated, but are way too vulgar, have some odd romanizations, were inconsistent on earlier projects, and leave in honorifics, leading to redundancies like "Lord-Sama" which essentially means "lord lord"

O-T is more casual, clean, and quick to release subs, but sometimes translate a bit too much, and translate some phrases weirdly as well as reworking some katakana spoken words

where both are at fault is not using western naming order, imporperly romanizing japanese names and words by leaving in extra letters, and blatantly ignoring english signs saying things like "Futo" or "Rabbit Hatch"

so yeah, it's kinda hard to take sides when both sides exhibit signs of either stupidity or a stuck-up idealogy that they know better
