In simple terms, a Majority Government has enough seats (and votes) to easily pass or kill any bills by itself. A Minority has more seats than any other party, but not enough to pass or kill any bills on their own, they need the support of the other parties to do that.

Harper is in a minority government but honestly he's been bullying his way around parliament and acting like he's got the majority of the support of Canadians and scaring the opposition party that couldn't afford to go into yet another election.

You know what I hate the most about elections? People who go 'Aww the Conservatives are going to win, I guess I should vote for them then.' GOD NO! That's not how it works you idiot! OFF COURSE they'll win if everybody thinks the same! You shouldn't throw your vote in because you think they'll win! This isn't a high school popularity contest! Vote for what you believe, vote against what you dislike, just VOTE without thinking of the fuckin' polls! Also stop voting out of blind loyalty! Your favorite party screws up in power? You kick them out.

Harper is hiding things! He's hiding from the press and his cabinet is nothing but a bunch of puppets and yes men!

Here in Canada government works a little bit differently. We do not vote directly for the person we want to lead the country like how is done in a republic. Instead, the country is basically broken up into specific voting districts known as "constituencies" or "ridings."

Each specific constituency elects one person to represent the people who live there within the federal government. The various political parties have potential candidates running in most, if not all the constituencies during the election. Whichever candidate gets the most votes within a constituency "wins the seat". Once all of the voting is done and tallied, whichever political party has won the most seats overall wins the right to form the government (everyone else forms "The Opposition"), and the leader of the winning party becomes the leader of the country (known here as the Prime Minister). Now if the winning party has won more than 50% of the available seats overall, they have a "majority government". If, however, they do not have more than 50%, then they have a "minority government."

Obviously, a majority government is what they want, because, as MS says here:

Wow, easy there Undrave.
Election before last i did just vote for the CON's since they where pretty much guaranteed to win, but last election i voted Liberal since they had a platform i liked.

This time....i'm not sure just yet.....

Sorry Metal, didn't want to make it sound like I was targetting you, but its actually a comment I heard on the friggin radio, an on-air personality saying that 'like most people' he votes for the party he thinks will win! That just... that just bothered me a LOT, I thought it was careless, stupid and insane. Some diatribe about 'Wasting your vote'. A vote is NEVER wasted! Even if your guy doesn't win each vote goes toward the allocation each party gets from the government. So the more people vote for a party the better their campaign will be at the next election.

Plus how does it make your vote matter if you vote for someone you don't believe in? Just to be a sheep? It doesn't make them win MORE, it just make them win more easily.

It just baffles me completely that people can think that way --.
