Next super sentai theme

Maybe they'll do something new and different again, now that they just tried trains.

Although, one thing I keep noticing is that, I think, they have been channeling older seasons the past couple of years- but I'm still not sure on whether it was an idea from the get-go, or something that just happened later.

Gokaiger is obvious.
Gobusters references the impending 20 year anniversary of MMPR multiple times.
Kyoryuger had the dinosaur theme & made many analogues to Abaranger, Zyuranger & MMPR without being too obvious.
To-Q-ger seems to be somewhat channeling Go-Go V design-wise.

Maybe next year will be something small that's been done before in Sentai, but not overtly focused on as an overall theme?

I think Jungle Animals might be next for 2015. Jungle Animals are popular with kids in both Japan and the US. Goaranger did great and Gekiranger didn't do that bad neither. I think it's time for another wild animal theme show. Go-Busters hardly count.

ToQger really seems influenced by Turboranger to me, and almost every major concept in Go-Busters is a modernization of something from Fiveman. I sometimes wonder if this is the most insicious problem modern Sentai is facing.

The current generation of creators are people who grew up watching late-Soda and post-Soda Sentai themselves, and this seems to result in backwards-facing seasons that rehash old plots/concepts with new coats of paint. So even when given fresh, new visual motifs, the writers inevitably fall back on boilerplate. Sure, they're not ideas the current crops of kids have seen before, but they probably still feel weird and stale to them. It's really hard to write someone else's idea any better than it was written in the first place.

I mean, I think a big part of why Kyoryuger did so well is that:

1) it was nostalgic for a lot of older seasons from different eras of the franchise, and combined elements from them in smart ways;
2) despite the heavy referencing of the other Dinosaur-themed shows, the season Kyoryuger was most nostalgic for was Dairanger;
3) unlike other seasons nostalgic for Dairanger, Kyoryuger's creators actually understood why Dairanger worked in the first place;
4) Kyoryuger resisted the temptation to just retread huge chunks of Dairanger's plot, and crafted a narrative that actually suited its audience.

Which are exactly the reasons why people enjoyed Kyoryuger & not either Go-Busters or Tokkyuger.

IMO, Toei needs to try a different motif, like a Dragon themed Sentai. They pretty much proved that they're running out of ideas of trying to do something different every time they repeat a certain motif.

Because enjoying all three is somehow not possible?

I disagree. There's no reason a new show with Motif A needs to be just like a previous show that used Motif A. It can be, but that doesn't mean it will be.

I'd really like to seem them try a horror theme, which is a classic rumor that gets thrown around almost every year along with the other theme I really want; the rumor where the rangers are based on various yokai and the villains are ninja. Both of these are fairly unlikely though.

Um thats kind of a bit turnaround.

sentai or power rangers ....Night Force.....vampire, werewolf, Frankenstein, medusa, mummy, zombie characters..and yes I have a great idea of which sentai characters would fit.

Loving the movie The Monster Squad growing up, I always wanted a group of Sentai villains to be based on the Universal Monsters. (Dracula would be the head villain, obviously, and Yutaka Hirose would have been perfect.) Imagine my disappointment at how badly I thought Magiranger handled this idea...

So, I then thought heroes based off those monsters would be cool. Along came Kiva, which botched the idea. I'm guessing those Universal Monster-type monsters just don't appeal to the Japanese much or else they'd have found better ways to use them.

How about a sports team themed Sentai? If so which sports are they going to use for this team?

There are certainly people who do. (There's aspects of all three shows I've enjoyed, but hell, there's aspects of Turboranger and Fiveman I enjoy.)

That said, it's pretty hard to argue that Kyoryuger didn't energize fans a bit more than the other two shows. ToQger is rarely discussed in much depth, and most Go-Busters discussion was more about why it was boring than really disputing the fact that it was boring.

Again, not saying these things somehow prove ToQ or Go-Busters are Objectively Bad. But there was definitely something about Kyoryuger that excited people that the other two shows lacked.
I think you solved the "riddle" right there in your post, actually.

Kyoryuger was simply a more energetic show. There was dancing, singing, music, and it was loud and embraced all of that.

Plus it had dinosaurs. Dinosaurs tend to make everything better when bugs aren't available. :laugh:
