Baccano and DRRRR would like a word.

To the best of my knowledge, both niche shows that ran in late-night timeslots, not mainstream hits. (Bonus: Baccano ran on WOWOW, a cable channel most Japanese households don't get. It's basically HBO anime.)

Both shows are also basically just ads for light novels. Most light novel-based anime feature more substantial writing than stuff written for TV or even adapted from manga anymore, since producers can't screw with it too much without making it into a rather poor ad.

As would H.O.T.D. and Fullmetal Alchemist.

In what universe is H.O.T.D. a serious show? It's a blood-on-tits show that's mostly about fanservice. I don't begrudge anyone their gory anime about trembling zero-gravity pudding-boobs but nobody's really going to take that seriously.

FMA is loaded with silly "wacky-take" expressions during serious scenes, obviously meant to make things feel less serious. It also has a lot of extended light comic relief of the sort you never would've seen in a comparable 80s property like Fist of the Night Star.

You know, I've been watching FotNS and while it's not bad, it is really repetitive. I mean, I like the show and all...buuuut, it's main draw is it's grit and crazy fights. And even the grit can be over the top sometimes. I mean, how many episodes does it take for a certain character I'm not saying because of spoilers to die. I think the way every episode ended was him looking at that star and saying "Well, one day this thing will kill me."

Yeah, HOTD is not a serious anime. That's not even supposed to be why people watch it.

FMA:B is fairly serious but also is fairly comedic (though that definitely slows down).

I think Shiki (WITH GACKT-SAMA!) is....well, I don't know if it's a hit, probably not, but it is the latest thing that I find fairly serious and I think it's a good show.

Shiki is based on a manga adaptation of a book though.

Episode 3 was pretty good.

When the cosplay lady looked at a photograph, Eiji was in it. Maybe she knows something about him...

I wonder who that little girl is Eiji keeps remembering about. An old friend maybe?
