Kamen Rider OOO - Talk Up!

It looks like Eiji has a dark history...

To me it looks kinda like he specifically has Himeya Jun's dark history.

That wouldn't be a bad thing to do in a Rider show, though I'm not sure I can take "I saw ethnic children die in foreign lands and now I'm angsty forever!" as seriously as a life-changing event in OOOs as I could in Nexus.

The first time we see Ultraman in Nexus it is as an enormous god-like annihilating fist of justice. The first time we see OOOs in this show, he's wondering why his own belt is singing to him.

This is exactly what I mean about OOO not being able to make up its mind.

I've always felt Carranger had some really outstanding action choreography, though it comes out mostly in the mechanical sequences. The on-foot sequences are very well-shot but are played for comedy more frequently than the mecha fights. RV Robo is honestly one of my favorite Super Sentai robots.

In general I don't think action choreography is really a problem for OOO. The fights are based on good solid concepts. I think it's more that the direction is a bit weak, the scenes just aren't shot as well as they could be.

It doesn't seem to be a question of bad talent because OOO's head director appears to be Ryuta Tasaki, who's done good work throughout most of Heisei Rider (including W) and... well, Carranger.

The only conclusion I can come to is that Tasaki is a bit bored by the material and phoning it in. I kind of get that feeling from the scripts, too. The giant block of exposition in episode 2 isn't really Kobayashi's style.

First off, RV Robo is hands down my absolute favorite sentai robo, so much love :D And yeah, Carranger definitely had some inventive action going on both on the ground and in robots. It was unique, it was fun, it just wasn't very... complex or elaborate--well, some of the robot stuff was. Still, Koichi it wasn't. Heh.

With OOO I'm seeing one-hit kills and power-shots so far. Battles are over quick. Ep. 1's fight looked like a turn-based RPG, and ANY giant fight out of Den-O has more substance to it than what we got out of Ep. 2. So far though I'm willing to just chalking it up to Toei and the writers trying to sell us on OOO's strength. Hopefully the fights will be a bit more balanced as the Yummy and Greeed grow stronger.

And your Tasaki theory wouldn't surprise me in the least. The whole "coin-op Rider" theme looks like it took a LOT of wrangling to get it to work. (And am I the only one who wishes this was a coin-operated arcade machine rider show instead of soda cans and vending machines? Yeah, I thought I was.)

I'm thinking it's like OOO is level 10 and the Yummys he fought so far were level 1.

Of course, Ankh maximizes his experience/cash by letting the Yummys get stronger. :P

His BFG comes out once he pulls down the handle on his belt and he gets the jackpot sign! Woot!

He needs to lower his level to increase his drop rate, not just raise the difficulty. He also needs to eat some Absolute Shadow Ramen to increase it by 3!
