Yes, that. Even purely from the writing perspective, making him the second Rider is lazy - he's the most obvious and predictable candidate for the role and he's no different from any other standard secondary Rider figure

I never realized foreshadowing was considered lazy writing.

And I don't think we've seen nearly enough of Gotou yet to merely dismiss him as a prick. He doesn't get that much screen time, and when he does, he doesn't say that much. Being quiet and skulky does not a prick make. The only solid argument I've seen is that he doesn't trust Eiji and Ankh, but I think he more considers Eiji a naive idiot, and it's pretty fucking obvious that ANKH SHOULDN'T BE TRUSTED. I think he's a fun character, but I'm not stupid enough to think that his goals are anywhere near altruistic.

And I'd say complete pricks are more Inoue's style (Kusaka, Kiriya, etc.) Yuuto and Takeru don't fall anywhere near these guys.

Not only that but when Kobayashi writes a character as a jerk, she expects the audience to love him no matter what he's done (smacking around a smaller guy, his love interest and/or his Imagin, being rude and aggressive to everyone, risking other people's lives ...) Kusaka and Kiriya were NOT written as characters whose behaviour we should approve of. Also the show is usually more interesting when we can't guess a mile away who the secondary Rider will be - when W was airing for instance, no one expected Kirihiko to be killed off and Terui to be brought in

It's pretty obvious that Inoue meant for us to sympathize with Kusaka and Kiriya. He went out of his way to try and give Kusaka a hero's death, despite never doing anything to deserve it, and he had Kiriya, who had done NOTHING to deserve it, become Hibiki's disciple.

Um... no. I think it's much more interesting that a secondary character be developed first before becoming a Rider... instead of someone that pops out of nowhere and saying "Hey! I'm a Rider too!" which unfortunately has become a common tradition in Heisei era KR.
