Mai's words definitely affected Kaito in that scene, but he didn't want to show and admit it, and leaves(read:escape) immediately. That scene sets up Mai as as someone who can affect Kaito further down the road.

I agree. And I think Mai is the reason why Kaito is softening his stance against Team Gaim, and decided to take out Hase and his gang later on with this Team Baron. It's still early, but I think eventually Kaito will become a different person down the road.
