Kamen Rider Drive - News/Rumours Thread 1

A lil late to hop into the discussion of how Drive will fare compared to Gaim. Then again, it's a bit EARLY to determine that.

But, one thing I figured, "worst" case scenario, is that after Gaim we go back to the usual format set by W with two-part arcs, gadget companions, etc... I kind of hope that if Gaim is faring well in Japan because of its departure from those tropes, they'll decide to apply Gaim's changes to future shows, cause changing the way things are paced REALLY makes a difference in how much story is being told and how fresh it can be. Redefine what Kamen Rider is in the modern era starting with Gaim.

That's really all I hope to see out of Drive so far.

^ I'm not sure we'll go back to the two-arc formula. If Toei dropped it, it's likely they decided it wasn't going to continue making money for them; like the reason Gaim didn't debut in the Wizard summer movie seems to be that the guest appearance wasn't pushing up ratings for the first episode of the new show any more

i could see screws working like keys for the gimmick and have the belt called the Screw Driver(a pun on Screwdriver).

as for the formula staying the same, it would be best for them to keep the continuous story in the shows instead of the two-episode monster of the week formula. i would like to see a story inspired by the real life story of late-famous formula one racer, Ayrton Senna, where the main rider is an underdog who becomes a famous racer but is somehow screwed by the racing corporations.(you guys might have to watch the documentary of Senna to understand what story idea i have)

I don't see Gadget robots coming back at least. That's more on the Bandai side, and dropping them seems to indicate they were displeased with how they performed. Same thing goes to multiple Riders too actually. Bandai apparently didn't even allow White Wizard to be called a Rider until Wizard was finished, since that'd go against their two Rider strategy, but now we had all these Riders from the start? Considering how Gaim is doing above expectations apparently, they might keep those.

On the other hand, Gaim's ratings aren't really impressive at all - they seem to be holding well, unlike most shows that just drop throughout, but at the lowest level ever for a Rider series. So, the story aspects might not influence later shows. However, I think a lot of that can be blamed on the fruit theme and following up series with low ratings too, considering how they don't seem to have a drop off after the usual debut episodes one. The demographic following the show might also be important too, regarding story influences of Gaim in the next Riders, and we don't have the demographic ratings yet.

I'm pretty sure the reason Gaim didn't debut in the Wizard movie was because they decided to have him appear in the two-part special just before his premiere.

The only thing is that the latest episode of Gaim has had the lowest ratings (something like 2% IIRC). It's absurd IMO, and the Kikaider crossover had much higher ratings. (Do people in Japan don't appreciate Gaim?:redface2:)

But either way Driver will have A LOT to live up to, and personally I won't have any expectations for it at all, just to avoid any potential disappointment.

It's ratings haven't improved over Wizard's, but IIRC the toy sales figures have increased quite nicely. The general rule with Rider seems to be "if it works, copy it". So I can only presume that they'll copy the general 'layout' of Gaim's toyline in terms of having multiple Riders, what type of equipment they'll all get etc, which fixes a lot of aspects of the show before they've even had their first meeting with Toei about it.

Of course the cynical side of me also recalls that they tend to do the same concepts and plots in subsequent shows, but often not as well as the one that set the trend. :disappoin

I personally don't think Drive needs to emulate Gaim in terms of tone or story, but just in general writing quality. And even if it doesn't necessarily have that, I can probably live with Drive so long as its enjoyable and fun to watch :).

i don't know why gaim's rating seems to be so low, considering how good its story comparing to its predecessors
is it because people there already watching it in web or something like that ? perhaps people there already badmouthin gaim because of its fruit theme ? idk to be honest

and if gaim's rating seems no increasing even until the final episodes, i don't see the reason about our next rider's ratings should done much better than gaim.....

Well, Kamen Rider's and Sentai's ratings have been on a steep decline downwards for some time and it's worse than ever now. At the very least Gaim's toy sales should prevent Toei and Bandai from writing it off as a failure
