W's kaijin concept seems to be basing Dopants off of the idea of English words, usually nouns. That's abstract but really pretty appropriate given what the show is about.

And if anybody's noticed, to me it seems like the Sonozaki dopants have a South American theme going on.

Smilodons can be found in Brazil... and Nazca dopant is self explanatory.

Hmm, how does Clay Doll fit in, then? It seemed to me she was based on something from Japanese folklore. There's also not really a clear connection for Taboo, either.

I wonder if the theme might be "ancient artifacts" or "ancient powers"?

incas/nazcans were famous for their pottery, and they practice spiritism and voodoo.,, which made them revere witch doctors.. which can be considered a taboo to some.. guess thats where they got the clay doll and taboo names.

I have to disagree, the Incans didn't practice anything like voodoo and didn't maintain what you could properly call houngans or even shamans. Voodoo has its roots in Africa. The Inca had priests and organized religion, not tribal religion. Taboo is a concept that comes into English from Polynesian cultures, anyway.

Clay Doll is just... well, to me, anyway, she's unmistakably based on a shakoukidogu and not just the general idea of clay or pottery. Even if Nazca and perhaps Terror are inspired by ancient South American imagery, Clay Doll just makes no sense viewed in that light.

well... neither does money or trex. guess we'll know one way or another in future episodes

I figure the non-Sonozaki Dopants are just whatever. :)

Though a friend of mine has an interesting theory that the theme for W's enemies will be "ancient powers," building off of the idea of the Gaia Memories. T-rex was an ancient creature, so was the anomalocaris, and I believe the first forms of money came into use 100,000 years ago.

It fits so far, though it's too soon to say that's a definite pattern...
