I had an immediate aversion to the series because I loathe the card gimmick, so I didn't watch it for a number of years. I also hated the design for King Form (still do for the most part). But sometimes I can go back to a Rider show and watch it through even if my problems with it remain. Sometimes when I try that, I can find something to enjoy to a greater or lesser degree. It didn't work with Hibiki, Kabuto I started out liking and after the first time it turned me off I gave it several other chances to no avail.
Ryuki I watched all the way through and kinda found myself wishing I had stopped at the movie. Faiz I got into even though I hated its pacing and Inoe was in full-on "I don't care about the superhero stuff I wanna write about people being sad all the time" mode. Lucky Clover just might be the laziest villan faction I've ever seen. But I like those slick tech-suits and I became a bit of a sucker for Takumi x Mari. Though overall, I'll just take Paradise Lost.
With Blade, I have no lost love for card gimmick but at the same time I really, really liked Blades pacing and I got into Kenzaki's and Tachibanas characters. Though Tachibana often being easily mislead was frustrating for me. I was never that big on him starting out cowardly. I ended up liking many other things about the show. I began to see why some fans of older Rider series were actually a bit kinder to Blade in comparrison to Ryuki and Faiz. I even started to dig on the henshin-wall effect after awhile. Remember Tachibana's jump off an overpass henshin?
Blades got it's flaws but somehow it struck me as a Rider show that had some of its priorities in the right place. It remembered that at the end of the day it's supposed to be a superhero action adventure series and the drama is there to lift that up. It had a consistant tone and one that fits for a Kamen Rider show. With the exception of the wacky but thankfully brief thing with Hajime losing his memory and his wacky lookalike.
I liked that Blade wasn't afraid to have some villans who were just straight-up, laugh maniacally evil like Tenouji. They had some of that cry for the monsters kind of stuff but they at least attempted to balance it out. I still say though and this really bugged me with Faiz. No character needs to be able to henshin into both a Rider AND a monster. That's sort of like when you're playing pretend as kids and you always get the kid who wants to be god of everything. "Okay I'm Iron Man and I can also turn into the Hulk!"
