Just watched Gojira 1954

The first time watching a movie so old and i have to say that i liked it.

Yeah i'm mostly not into these monster genre movies but it was quite entertaining.

i'm planning to watch more of these movies but i'm not doing it one by one. i'lll see which intrest me more.

anyone here have opinions about it?

masterpeice is all I have to say about it and showed what godzilla was supposed to be; destruction and anger. he wasn't supposed to be fun like king kong or the ray harryhousen monsters, but something to be afraid of, the embodiment of pure wrath. the american edit wasn't bad, but raymond burr just seemed to be bored in the role.
I also suggest seeing godzilla vs monster zero, just for nick adam and kumi mizunos performance (supposedly, they were getting it on behind stage and she's believed to have been the reason for his death!)

Freaking fantastic film that ought to be required viewing for everyone, especially fans of Tokusatsu. This is where the genre began. The had been special effects work in Japan before, but this was the first flight of fantasy. Sure, it was a pretty terrible nightmare, but it was a flight of fantasy nonetheless.

Later Godzilla films get to be fun as hell and I love them all. It's weird to look at those and then look at the somberness of the original film - there isn't a single other film in the genre quite like it.

You can read my thoughts more in-depth here: http://111-archer-avenue.blogspot.com/2008/11/godzilla-is-2000054-years-old-this.html

Also, old movies are the best and you should watch more of them.

the first godzilla film is a classic. try to watch some more of the old movies. i suggest u check out mothra vs godzilla. its a good movie.

One of my favorite scenes in the film has to be the one where the civilians are complaining about having to go back to the World War 2 era shelters for Gojira's attack.
The best film of the Heisei era [Gojira 1984-Gojira vs Destroyah], IMHO is Gojira 1984. It's the most realistic when it comes to portraying the inner workings of the Japanese government and Japan's political position in the world during the Cold War. Just stay away from the American butchery that is Godzilla 1985 and stick to the original Japanese version.

I watch Godzilla for the kaiju battles... not for the historical correctness.

Watch Godzilla vs. Biollante. While not an original Godzilla villian, Biollante is a great monster and a worthy foe of Godzilla.
I would give you more info on the monster itself, but I don't want to spoil anything.

Also, does anyone know if we have an official Godzilla/Gojira thread going on here on Henshin Justice?

I watch Godzilla for the kaiju battles...

Kaiju battles are great. But for me, they're even better when I know there's a good story with interesting social/political/environmental themes surrounding it.

Which is why Gojira is my favorite of all the G-Films. Of course, I love a lot of the later films for their action/adventure qualities, but the original is an actual "good movie" whether you're into monster battles or not.

The US version, "King of the Monsters" is pretty good in its own right, but it loses a lot of the depth and political commentary that put the japanese version on another level from all other monster movies.
