Job Hunting...

I like you two...great info.

'cept I did basically apply everywhere, even places not hiring, it's just that my resume is so pathetic that most employers would seem to hire someone else...

question on the online app though, should you send a cover letter with it, or just the plain old resume? I took a career help/education class in college...& failed it somehow. ;-/ yeah...

did you get called for an interview. there are a lot of places.

I apply for 3 and got called for 2 interviews, taco bell and toys r us

i went for both, but I took taco bell. now I regret it

don't give up hope

look on the news paper.

when you apply online for an normal job, give a resume, if you want to make it flashy then use a cover letter, it does not always help.

how can your resume be pathetic? you went to college? passed high school. you most have some skills. use microsoft word to help you make a resume with the wizard

tell you this...my boss hires pretty girls. or people who have worked on previous taco bells before. but he is a jackass, I got in at taco bell 2 years ago. almost 3, and i din't know crap, in a month I became cashier, and respected by my fellow co workers because of the work I did. and with a smile :)

good luck

plain ol resume. I was a manager once and I didnt really care about the cover letter. I just skipped it usually and went straight for the credentials and list of references.

Here's a couple extra resume tips:
-It doesn't matter if you have no experience. Even a high school kid can work at Walmart or Best buy. So why cant you? You don't need years of experience to work in retail or a business of labor.

-Sell yourself: If you don't have the best of experience, don't rely on it. Tell the employer in your app why they should hire you. What are your strengths? What can you provide them if they hire you? Tell them "I'm willing to work the hours. I'm willing to learn the job quickly and effectively. I'm great at customer service/multi-tasking/salesmanship."

-Find out what the job requires you to do and let the employer know what skills you have that match those requirements. Does the job require multi-tasking? Have you multitasked before on or off the job? Tell them about it. Let them know you're good at it!

-References. Always provide them. Some employers dont bother calling but they all want them. I never hired anyone at my store that didn't provide references. If you don't have a reliable work reference, put down your friends or family. make it up if you have to! There have been a few times that I had my own dad pretend to be one of my previous bosses just because I didn't have a reliable work reference. You have to play it smart.

Interview tips:
-Dress nice. If there are no guidelines for dress on an interview, just dress nicely. Slacks, business shirt. I typically do not wear a coat or tie. Most people do but I feel that ties and coats are too formal.

-Some people bring their resume with them to the interview. I don't. The employer should already have that information when I sent it to them with my application. And if they need to know anything, I can gladly provide it to them verbally. I know what's on my resume and if they don't, I can inform them. Which is the best way to do it. Let them know about yourself through you and speak about yourself confidently. You know you can do this job. So let them know that!

-Eye contact. It's more difficult to keep eye contact. I have trouble doing it myself. I like to trail my vision away while I talk and collect my thoughts. But when you lock in eye contact, that shows confidence and the willingness to do the job. Dont trail off in your vision or look away. Always keeps those eyes forward and on your employers as you speak.

Again, if you really want the job, you'll get it. It's very easy. I've never been unemployed for longer than 3 weeks.

This is another thing to watch out for. Don't hesitate to accept a job. Even if you think you might not like it, just accept the job. Because even if it turns out terrible, at least you can earn some money while you continue the search for another job. Just because you have a job, doesnt mean you cant keep searching. But like Kamen Sentai said, never give up hope.

Don't just say "woe is me" and stop trying. It's going to be rough at first. But trust me, you'll get those calls. Be diligent.

Something like that happened to me. I got called for an interview, and I was told that I qualified for the job, but I didn't get hired because I didn't look interested. Actually I was just a little concerned. When I was told what the job entails, I was just wondering if it might be too complicated for me, even though the guy interviewing me said it's quite simple.

well the story of why I regret it now is quite simple

back then, I had a different boss, and things were done different, everyone had the same hours and everything was fair, there were no favorites

now we got a new boss about 8 months ago. things became bad, they took away my hours and he gives them to 2 young girls that he always flirt with them, and they flirt with him, fucking brown noses, then we have my other manager, who he is really nice, sadly he has a boyfriend who works with us too (yes he has a he, I'm cool with it) but he also gives him more hours than us normal workers. now there is me....the Regional Manager's nephew. I am a hard worker, I worked there for 2 years. almost 3, I know the in and outs, I could be manager. my uncle does not help at all. and my boss, the General manager of the store hates me because of it...cause I am his bosse's nephew. I get crap from him and my uncle. work on drive through by myself every time I work there, by myself. and that's a 2 person job.

and when I complain. my uncle does not listen to me

I am either going to write a letter to a higher up. or take this kind of thing like a bitch till I finish college and get a better job as a graphic designer or Chef (I dont know what to go for yet)

I still get 40 hours every 2 weeks, that gets me 300 every 2 weeks. it keeps me there with a :)

Kamen Sentai: I would definitely contact your HR department. Because I see several problems with your work environment. Usually Managers are not allowed to date employees and if they are, the employee is normally moved to a different store location. So that's a problem. Also, if you are working a shift under inadequate working conditions I would contact HR to find out what you can do about that.

However I don't think working a drive through alone is new for fast food. It happens to a lot of people. I see it all the time, late at night. If you are working a drive-through by yourself during rush hour (afternoon or lunch) then you are definitely being miss-managed and misstreated at the workplace. But working it alone late at night is common in fast food.

Don't write a letter. You simply dont know if it will ever be read. Get a phone number and make a phone call. Talk to someone directly.

If I were in your position, I would get transferred to a different store. It's taco bell, so if it comes down to it, it wouldnt be impossible to get transferred to another Taco Bell that's nearby. If your working conditions are biased or skewed, definitely contact HR and get the ball rolling on a transfer. (normally you should contact your District Manager about transfers, but it sounds like that might not help you in your current situation.) You need a positive work environment with a manager who can see your potential for a promotion and nurture it.

I've been in crappy positions before with bosses. I either quit or I get transferred. Because life's too short to put up with nonsense.

300...
...
that...
kinda sucks...
Oh wait, I was paid teh same when I started...I think...
but then again I had 401K, insurance, and dental so...
That's another thing, benefits.
Make sure your job gives decent benefits.

I work by myself on rush hours. 12 to 3, then they kick me out and leave a manager there to work for me when it gets slow

yup they are dating. and both are guys. just saying, I dont mind it, but its wrong for us workers, cause they are dating

my brother even got a job there, now they don't give him hours because they keep saying he is too inexperience, that's a load of crap, my brother memorize the whole cash register in a month, including codes. and those codes are fucked up, they rather give hours to brown nose people

yeah I get 600 a month

and I hate how the managers can sit around and work when they want, but when my uncle comes in, they start working like crazy.

yeah I would get HR, but I have no proof that they are dating or living together, they will deny it. I hate that.

I know life is short, but I will get them back, I swear I will, and they wont see it coming. bad things happen to bad people. and I will get my payback...THEY WILL PAY.

besides that, I work too hard for taco bell...I will ask for a rise soon.

I would ask for a transfer, but its really unfair, I been there longer than the new manager and I have to move because of that ass. the closest taco bell its pretty far.

I can deal with it. I will contact HR when I get dirty and proof on them, rumors around my job says that my general manager gets with one of the girls I told you guys about. ugh

when you stated, I been there almost 3 years. so yeah

Kenori, another piece of advice to give you, NETWORKING. I was unemployed for over four months this year, and finally got a job because a woman who used to come into my Starbucks passed my resume along to the hiring manager at the company she worked at. I was the only person they interviewed for the position and didn't totally suck, so of course I got it. Managers want the least amount of effort to get a good person for a job. If someone they know and trust says you're a hard worker, it can go a long way. Before I quit my job at the Starbucks, there had been about 5 people working there that I had known from either high school or college, who I had helped get hired.
