James Bond Theory

A lot of people loved Casino Royale, and the "it's like the books" rationale is what I hear most of the time. *shrug* I thought it was a bad movie, but I'm in the minority.

What's funny is that Casino Royale isn't "like the book." In the book, Vesper's betrayal and relationship with Bond had much more depth. Casino Royale had a lot of flaws, but failing to make their relationship have as much meaning was the number one problem for me. They didn't seem like they loved one another. At all. So it meant nothing.

I avoided reviews when the movie first came out and saw it and enjoyed it. I felt somewhat disappointed as an entry by Martin "GoldenEye" Campbell and didn't like it as much as the novel, but it certainly beat Die Another Die (which isn't difficult). And I liked Craig, but...man. All the critics and the fans and their hyperbolic ravings really ruined the movie for me. It's a seriously flawed movie, but that doesn't stop people from making such exaggerated claims as "The best Bond film since Goldfinger!" or "Craig is the best thing to happen to Bond since the vodka martini!" or "Craig erases the memory of Connery!" or "Ian Fleming would have stood up and applauded this movie!" :shakefist

Dalton's my favorite Bond (Connery in second). I love Licence to Kill, which is unfortunately the bastard of the series. So, what gets me the most is...what everyone praised Casino Royale for is what they had blasted Licence to Kill for doing when it was released...! And Licence to Kill is the better movie. Dalton returned Bond to the Fleming roots, but (unlike Craig), at least retained the required amount of charm. However, critics still sling the insults to Dalton, while praising Craig and going as far as nominating him for a BAFTA. The hype for the movie was just ridiculous, really reminiscent of Batman Begins. What's the big deal about these movies? The best you can say about them is that they're not as bad as the preceding entry (which it isn't hard to be better than Die Another Day or Batman & Robin).

This is the best review of Casino Royale I've seen: http://www.fulvuedrive-in.com/review/4600/Casino Royale (2006/Theatrical Film Review) I agree with so much of it, it's scary. However, I don't think that the remedy is to end the Bond series; simply bring on better producers.
