About Jackass as a reality show: what guys like Johnny Knoxville and Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn and Chris Pontius and all the rest do cannot be categorized the same way a show like Jersey Shore or The World is.

Segments were preconceived, but not scripted or tested and each stunt was left to unfold the way it would as it was being filmed. Like Dami mentioned, the premise of Jackass was genuine: a bunch of actual friends actually hanging out and actually hurting or humiliating themselves for their own amusement and the entertainment of others.

It wasn't all high-brow or seemingly intelligent viewing content by any means, but I don't think it should be consigned to a judgement of more insipid reality TV garbage, either. Members of the Jackass crew are really pretty bright individuals, several of which should rightfully be considered legitimate entertainers. It's comparable to the humor style of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, juvenile, vulgar, trashy, with an emphasis on extreme revulsion and violence, but which also contains a lot of very cleverly veiled wit and knowledge of what makes people laugh and why.

It's apparent just by watching the way the Jackass crew interact with one another in series footage that they are all good friends, and it must be a blow to them all to lose a friend as vivacious, lighthearted and infectiously fun as Ryan Dunn.

And if you add in the fact that a good number of the Jackass crew were doing the CKY videos even before doing Jackass (and Haggard/Minghags afterwards)... that makes it even more sad.

What I am eluding to is a story in which Roger Ebert made some comments about Ryan Dunn`s death that could be taken as somewhat insensitive.In fact, Bam Margera has actually responded to Ebert`s comments..and let`s just say he calls him every name in the book.

I don`t want to beat up on Ebert since I know what he`s been through the past several years,however, I don`t think it would be in poor taste to say that I have lost a LOT of respect for him.

Since posting that tweet, Ebert has been eviscerated by friends of Dunn and his fans; one of Ebert's Facebook pages even disappeared for a bit.

Dunn's "Jackass" co-star Bam Margera wrote: "I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of s--- Roger Ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents." Perez Hilton later blogged that Ebert's comments were "insensitive." Late Monday, Ebert defended his earlier tweet, writing, "Perez Hilton's readers agree with me and not with Perez about my tweet on Ryan Dunn. He drank, he drove, 2 people died."

Ebert might be finding support via Perez Hilton readers, but on a Facebook page for Ebert that is still live, the comments and wall posts are nothing short of hateful. One of the only safe-for-work comments on his wall reads in part,"Mr. Ebert, your comments yesterday showed a true lack of tact and your inability to relate with the human race. I cannot believe you would, within 24 hours of the incident and before an autopsy, make such a deep and hurtful remark."

In a blog post on Tuesday headlined "Friends don't let friends drink and drive," Ebert does offer his sympathy to Dunn's family and friends and writes, "I was probbaly too quick to tweet."

While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, one thing is certain: Ebert has tripped into a hornets nest of loyal fans and angered a large, loyal population. Just look at the numbers: When "Jackass: The Movie" opened in 2002, it was made on a production budget of $5 million, and the film grossed more than $79 million worldwide. Eight years later, "Jackass 3-D" opened to a $50 million weekend and made more than $170 million worldwide during its run in theaters.

That's strange to me. I'd air them all as scheduled, with a tribute to him at the beginning.

The problem with that is he was driving drunk and killed the passengers in his car through his own negligence. If G4 made something out of his death, the channel could be perceived as paying tribute to a murderer, which would both be bad press and open them up to lawsuits from the family members of the other victims.

It's kinda like how the WWE ran the hell away from saying anything about Chris Benoit ever again when the details of that tragedy were revealed.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure there were a lot of people across the internet saying/thinking the same thing as Ebert was. They just don't have his celebrity status to make them targets.

He could have waited or been more sensitive towards the family, sure. Unfortunately, it still doesn't change the basic truth of the matter.
