It's time to come out...

I don't think it has anything to do with Dark/Mature or Funny/Goofy or whatever.

Personally, I like both. If I had seen a different show first such as Den-O, Kabuto, Faiz, or whatever, I'd probably have still liked it. It just depends, because I don't like all Dark/Mature shows & I don't like all the Funny/Lighter themed shows, or all the ones that in inbetween.

& Actually, GARO did not get me started into Toku. I watched it & hadn't planned to further investigate any Toku. Then one day my brother got me to watch Kamen Rider Blade, & that show got me hooked into Toku. I absolutely loved it & it made me want to watch more.

rawr.

I personally loved it. It should still be a good way to ease people into toku, though...some good horror/action. :)
Woof.

I guess it's a good show to demonstrate to people that tokusatsu isn't all kiddy, but I agree Yellow, it's easier to get people into the goofier shows.

Show him Garo. Problem solved.

Not exactly 100% guarantee that it solves it. I tried showing Gora to my anime club in High School and they still labeled it as power rangers >:( Even after seeing a guy get decapitated into pieces and then when they saw the Garo suit they were like "Oh look power rangers!" In my mind I was like "F*** YOU!"

off-topic, but

What was your first Toku??

Pretty sure it was Ultraman Leo when I was like...4? Yeah, I've been into tokusatsu all my life...granted that's only been 19 years so far. I visited Mexico pretty often as a kid and they always had some form of tokusatsu on.

Well, they aren't necessarily wrong. Especially when over here in the states, Power Rangers is the only name in the sub-genre. Next time, check and see if they are using Power Rangers as a Catch-all term for heroes like that.

I would also suggest showing off shows like Den-O or any other ones that have a high-profile character being voiced by a veteran Seiyuu to you guys who are in Anime Clubs. You might get a better success rate, even if it's only for that one show.

In that aspect, Kiva would be a good show, what with Kivat's seiyuu being in Haruhi and all that.

Kiva just seems like it would a good one in general actually. Yeah It's not the greatest Kamen Rider series I have seen, but it's a show set in the middle of the two extremes, "Light/Goofy" and "Dark/Mature". I feel there is always a good amount of decent humor flying around the episodes, while still taking the events of the show with a serious attitude.

The fact that's it is incomplete right now prevents me from really judging the series if it's a good entry point for the sub-genre. Though Nago does hurt the show a bit, but not to the point where it would be unwatchable by anime clubs.

Then try Garo, I hear it's better than Gora. XD

But really, if someone watches Garo, & says it looks like Power Rangers..., They're just stupid.

I never thought that when I watched it. XD & It was the first Toku Show what someone got me to watch.
