Hellraiser - Talkback (All movies)

Ok lets go flavorwise on this for a while (cuz you all know how much I likes me some flavor) Are cenobites demons, or something else?

Well, in the first film, and to some extent, the second, they are presented as beings from another dimension. While they could be said to be demons from hell, this is not stated outright until the second film. Pinhead warns a character that if they try to trick him, their suffering 'will be legendary, even in Hell.'

As the films went on, they tied in more specifically with the Christian idea of demonology. A character summons a compatriot of Pinhead's using specific black magic rituals, pentagram, etc. So by the 4th film, we understand that they are in fact demons.

However, it is unclear whether the realm where they reside (The Labyrinth) is supposed to be Barker's vision of Hell in its entirety, or if it is a specific region of Hell. It is unclear whether the god that they worship, Leviathan, is meant to be Satan or simply the ruler of this section of Hell. I do know that they were originally meant to be something entirely different from the supernatural entities that we know from the Bible and folklore, but they have since been 'shoehorned' into Christian theology.

I hope this answers your questions.

It does and I appreciate it, but for some reason I had this idea that at some point in time the cenobites went to war with the demons, and thats why they are sorta "stuck" in the dimension that the box opens on...

I honestly have no idea where that came from...

Glad you are enjoying your journeys with the Cenobites. K, to clear up some confusion.

1. The Barker story where he kills Pinhead is called The Scarlet Gospels, which Clive is currently working on, but he says the final draft is going to be 2-3 THOUSAND pages. His publisher wants him to break it up into several books, but he says no.

2. Officially, Barker does not have any creative control over the remake/reboot/reimagining. Weinstein company owns the rights. However, they have done their best to run things past Barker to get his input. The new director, Pascal Laugier, is working very closely with Barker to make this an adaptation of the book The Hellbound Heart. Unlike the first film, Julia is the real villain in the book. The Cenobites are not in it very much, and act more a force of nature, inescapable, rather than either good/evil.

As for the series, here is my rating:

Hellraiser: 5/5
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 -5/5
Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth- 3/5
Hellraiser: Bloodlines- 4/5
Hellraiser: Inferno-2/5
Hellraiser: Hellseeker-1/5
Hellraiser: Deader-0.5/5
Hellraiser: Hellworld- .25/5.

The only reason Hellworld got that much point value is due to the ending scene. I thought that was cool. Other than that, it was weaksauce.

Also, Shaun you should watch Nightbreed. Great underrated gem of a movie.

Awesome. A few questions

#1) What are the names of all of the Cenobites?.

#2) Why was Chinnard going ape **** in Pinhead's Hell and killing everyone including the Cenobites?.

#3) Do the original Cenobites return any time? I loved the dude with the chomping teeth.

I gotta say I enjoyed 5 and 6. Not as much as the first 4 of course but I found these 2 movies to still entertain me in that SAW kinda way.

I remember Graig Schaffer from a tv show, and Trevor from pt.6 was on Terminator:TSCC, no?. My God did Kristy get extremely sexy.

So the final 2 movies... hopefully I'll enjoy DEADER alot better the 2nd time around.

HEy asshole, I asked u to tell me ALL of the Cynobites and u didn't reply.

Anyway Movie 7 rewatch (Deader) was better the 2nd time but still ended up being crap, I cheered like a pedophile at Jackson's Neverland when Pinhead finally showed up and killed all of those fucks.

final movie is up next.

Yeah the first one was amazing. The other ones just gradually got worse. Then again, I don't recall some of the later ones. Not sure if I've seen ever hellraiser.

Pt. 8 was aight, I prefered it over 7 overall but yeah I think the series truly ends with pt 4.

Still not as horrible as Jason Goes to Heck though.

Good heavens... ermm, I mean... good hell! Pinhead used to scared teh **** out of me when I was little. I couldn't even stand seeing a DVD cover with him on it. :P

But now I think he's awesome. I remember watching all the movies many years back when I wanted to challenge some of my childhood fears and explore them. I watched 1 and 2, which I both enjoyed. I didn't really like 3 but I think I liked 4. The rest I just couldn't bother with anymore.

Speaking of Hellraiser... a pic of the toys I took a while back:
