Interesting thing. Jem was executive produced by Margaret Loesch, the same executive who was instrumental in bringing Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers to Fox Kids in the 90s.
Loesch is currently the current President and CEO of The Hub, where My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic airs. I believe Loesch was the executive who green-lit the current MLP series, just as she green-lit MMPR back in the 90s.
Gentlemen: My Little Pony is the direct descendant of Power Rangers.
If I recall correctly, didn't she initially pitch a pilot for Masked Rider that was a bit darker and more mystical? ISTR they ended up toning it down into what we got due to standards and practices or some anti-violence movement that was going on at the time.
Masked Rider was produced with really unfortunate timing. It was right around the time parents groups were getting really vocal with their distaste for the violence in Power Rangers. There was no way they could've done a more properly Rider-like show in that environment.
