Tani Hayato/Hajime Iwatani (September 9, 1946) portrayed Chief Sugata in 1987's Hikari Sentai Maskman. He is also known for his work on Takeshi's Castle (he is Captain Tenneal's in the horribly butchered SpikeTV show, MXC).

After watching so much Jetman recently, I went and watched some Maskman (come on, Jetman wouldn't exist without Gatchaman or Maskman) and forgot how much ass Tani kicked. He needed more focus episodes.

It's awesome how absolutely serious he took everything, never reaching levels of hammy acting.

Sugata's best moment? Meditating and lending his massive Aura Power to Maskman when they were getting their asses kicked by Kiros. Nowadays that would just be replaced by a tenth hero.

Any meditation scene is pretty nice in Maskman.

Sugata is the best Sentai commander/assistance IMO.
He's cool and not someone in a goofy robot suit like Peebo or Magu and definitely not a furry blue puppy.

Sugata is the best Sentai commander/assistance IMO.

Sugata's my favorite because Tani's so cool, but I think Changeman's Ibuki's the best storywise. Sugata's story doesn't make much sense, when you think about it. He's a martial arts genius, also this type of guru who knows the ways of Aura Power, but...also owns a racing company. :eyebrow: I know it was just a cover, but shouldn't it have been something more fitting? Like a chain of karate dojos?

But it's still better than Yumeno's cover in Dynaman...a playground. :nono:

Peebo...everything Bioman had going for it and they took everything down several notches thanks to Peebo. That voice...*remembers Mandora-Boy* Wait, Peebo rocked!

Well, lets look at the positive side.
This means that Sugata's an all-rounder and very versatile.
He knows his martial arts and at the same time, owns a racing company!

How I wished either Peebo, Magu or even Colon would tear Mandora, leaf by leaf.
