That's a pretty flimsy reason not to say it's not a true Godzilla film. If anything the movie echos some of the feelings from the original Gojira, and that film wasn't exactly perfect either, no Godzilla film is.

A very, very, very minor nitpick in a good movie.

[HIDE]The build up to the Atomic breath was great but the actual Atomic breath looked…sorta weak. The MUTO's EMP attack looked more impressive. I am gonna die from this right?[/HIDE]

The mere fact that there is an atomic breath in the movie is good enough for me. Plus, the second time he uses it is just sick.

I wasn't expecting much, I just want to have this film jump start the genre. I think Apollo Z Hack mentioned that if this movie fails, the genre is dead.

I've seen it twice already and being perfectly honest, I was a bit disappointed the first time around. Not because of Godzilla's lack of screen time but because of how little he had to do with the story and that he gets praised as the hero at the end. For 2 years, I was expecting a movie with a vengeful, destructive Godzilla with a little bit of the new monsters thrown in, not the other way.

However, after much thought and analysis, I went into it a second time with fresh eyes and different expectations and decided that yes, this is a really good movie. The key is not to see it as a rebirth or the first of a new rebooted franchise, but simply as just another Godzilla movie amongst the pantheon of Godzilla movies that just happens to have a higher budget.

I watched 24 Godzilla movies within 5 days in preparation for this, and structure-wise, this movie is no different than any other Godzilla flick. If they had done this plot in one of the Millennium series movies, no one would be able to tell the difference.

That's the success of the film. They had all the chances to screw it up like last time, but they came out with a solid Godzilla film that can stand with the others. Sure, it's not groundbreaking or redefining in any way. But I think being in line with the others is triumph enough to say...Yeah, I liked it. I liked it a lot.

I saw Godzilla yesterday. The movie was...okay. That's it. It wasn't revolutionary and it was by no means bad. Read on but - beware! - spoilers lie ahead.

The Good:
1) When Godzilla did appear, he did so like a boss. The CG rendering of him is very impressive.
2) Special effects were awesome, but not excessive as, say, in Man of Steel.
3) The first thirty minutes or so really shined with Bryan Cranston.
4) Climatic fight in San Francisco was climatic. :anime:
5) Some really awesome imagery (Hawaii after destruction, the HALO jump into San Francisco, Godzilla gliding through the ocean, giant skeleton beneath the ground in the Philippines, etc.).
6) DEM ROAARZ. xD

The Bad:
1) The other monster designs were very uninspired. Both Cloverfield and Pacific Rim had better looking and more imaginative designs. They are vaguely insectoid in appearance, and have movement reminiscent to a primate of some sort. They are not memorable.
2) They killed off Joe Brody (Cranston's character) far, far too early. The son, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was not nearly as interesting (nor is Johnson a capable an actor as Cranston) and cliched as the good-hearted soldier.
3) Godzilla as savior. I know a lot of people will not really mind this, but Godzilla always seems his best to me when he's evil. There's a scene that takes place on the Golden Gate Bridge where Godzilla even appears to protect people on the bridge from military artillery...though that may have just been coincidental.
4) It's already been said, but there wasn't enough Godzilla for me. The movie could have been titled MUTOs, guest starring Godzilla.
5) The movie sort of focused on a government conspiracy to hide the truth in the beginning and I wish that had been allowed to play out more. Unfortunately, after the cat was out of the bag, they shifted into full-on "stop the monsters at any cost" mode and that storyline was lost.

Those are my thoughts on it. Like I mentioned, I think it is an okay movie and I enjoyed it despite its shortcomings.

Godzilla isn't usually evil, it's just pissed off to begin it. After all, he/she is a product of nuclear radiation due to human error in the past. Basically, Godzilla is sent by Mother Nature to destroy those who are responsible for his/her mutation and destroying his/her abode.

I guess what I describe as "evil" is just Godzilla showing up and wiping everything out while giving exactly zero damns.
