And the battles were mercifully short.

I enjoy older Sentai more than I do with a lot of newer stuff, though I tend to look at the story content of the older shows as something you have to read between the lines to get the same meat out as you could in the modern shows. (or at least until Bioman came along)

So you're saying they're more complex and make you think? If so, I love that. Nothing beats a deep show.

Some older sentai (particularly from dynaman onwards) can have plot twists or the occasional story arc, usually two parters. Nothing really deep though.

It kind of depends on the season. Liveman dealt with some pretty heavy stuff, with the destruction of the team's academy and space shuttle, while Flashman's heroes involved learning about Earth, even knowing they can't stay more than a year.

The 80s sentai in general seem to have more of a rep for being the "serious" years, even though they had their fair share of goofiness at times.

A couple random thoughts as I've caught up with ep 6: The zoo bits at the end of ep after the mecha fights really feel like the public service announcements at the end of lots of 80s American toons, especially with this eps "Machines take over homes" theme.
