As I said, it probably wasn't your intent to come off sounding that way, but unfortunately because of how the post was worded, that IS how it came off as sounding. From that reading that first post, the impression was left that you were taking this very seriously, and so people responded in kind.Meh, those who take it as an attack then obviously don't know how grow up and not take the internets seriously. Those who think I have some vendetta against some group (which I don't) is pretty petty.
Having watched and participated in several debates myself in high school and university debate meets, I know from first hand experience that it is done that way, probably more often than people realize. You don't comment on speeches/articles as a whole, because then you're not being specific enough in your argument, which leads to people misunderstanding what your argument is trying to say, which in turn means it will not be as effective. You don't respond vaguely to the whole thing, you go for specific points within it. When the next U.S. Presidential debates are televised in 2008, watch them. You'll see that the candidates do it all the time.Picking what you like from my opening statement and running with it is not how you debate D:
Remember the other side of the coin, people are only on the defense when they feel that they're being attacked. If they didn't feel like that, there wouldn't be any need to be defensive.I'm amazed that this thread has went on for four pages mostly people jumping to conclusions and stuff. Everyone is always on the defense -- its kinda sad![]()
