Dragon Age: Origins

Turn off friendly fire by lowering the difficulty level? I think that's a way. XD Sorry, I haven't played much as a mage, so I don't have any advice to give.

I just got the game for Christmas - it's badass. I keep starting with new characters... Waaah.

That's pretty much the only way on the console versions. Easy mode should have friendly fire disabled, the PC version you can download mods to remove friendly fire from spells.

What'll be the best class to start off with? I was tempted to go with Mage myself.

Any of them are fun. I like having a Mage or a Rogue as my PC, since I tend to control them directly a lot more.

The console versions have friendly fire turned off for Normal difficulty. You can still freeze/knock down your companions, but they won't take damage.

Do the Dwarf Noble origin and you will find out that Bhelen is pretty much a backstabbing prick.

Spoilers for the Orzammar quest:
[hide]Also, if you bring the contracts Bhelen's guy gives you to show the supposedly doublecrossed nobles to the Shaper, the Shaper will point out that the contracts have been altered to make Harrowmont look bad. Whereas if you back Harrowmont from the beginning and enter the tournament, you'll find Bhelen's been blackmailing Harrowmont's fighters to get them to drop out.

If you tell Bhelen that Harrowmont is having you go after the crime syndicate, he has you plant faked documents in the hideout to implicate Harrowmont, whereas if you do it the other way around, Harrowmont has you search for documents in the hideout that end up implicating Bhelen.[/hide]

Whichever you like. Just remember this:

PC is a healer mage: Leave out Wynne
PC is a nuke mage: Leave out Morrigan
PC is a DD Warrior: Leave out Sten
PC is a Tank Warrior: Leave out Alistair
PC is a Rogue: Leave out Zevran/Leilana, have Alistair
