Quite the interesting mix of genres for this one: "Dickens-ian" (Victorian) England and all the "A Christmas Carol" tropes involved, Steam-Punk, Far-Future (possibly "Retro-future")/Alien-ish tech, Time-travel paradoxes, and Shark-like monsters.

Before the trailer there was also a brief framing bit involving some kids getting their wish granted to see the TARDIS set and also get to have "tea with a Timelord":

That was really sweet.

I recently got the Season 5 DVD set, and I have to say, I was kind of disappointed. After 4 seasons of having commentary on every episode, it was rather upsetting to only have it on a select few, as well as as most of the episodes i really wanted to hear a commentary track for, they didn't have one.

Synopsis/teaser information for "A Christmas Carol" has been released (Spoiler Warning):
[HIDE]Doctor Who Christmas Special – A Christmas Carol
BBC ONE and BBC ONE HD
www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho

Amy and Rory are trapped on a crashing space liner, and the only way The Doctor can rescue them is to save the soul of a lonely old miser, in a festive edition of the time-travelling adventure, written by Steven Moffat. But is Kazran Sardick, the richest man in Sardicktown, beyond redemption? And what is lurking in the fogs of Christmas Eve?

Amy Pond is played by Karen Gillan, Rory Williams by Arthur Darvill, The Doctor by Matt Smith and Kazran Sardick by Michael Gambon.

Doctor Who is simulcast in HD on BBC One HD on Freesat channel 108, Freeview channel 50, Sky channel 143 and Virgin Media channel 108.

In addition, the episode will be shown on BBC America at 9PM on Christmas Day, as well as the Doctor Who Prom, and both of these will be preceded by a Doctor Who Marathon starting at Midnight on Christmas Eve. No idea on when it will be shown on SPACE, though.

And in other news, the Nerdist Podcast with Matt Smith has been released. Among the highlights and topics discussed are: Matt Smith talking briefly about a new monster that appears in Episodes 1 and 2 of Series 6, which Smith says "is on par with The Weeping Angels," and is part of a story arc from Series 5; his audition to play The Doctor; his early career before the Who role; playing with Orbital at Glastonbury earlier this year; and the short stories that he wrote about The Doctor and Albert Einstein.
