Doctor Who -Talk Up! (General Discussion)

The Eighth Doctor's new costume

http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.com/2010/10/new-eighth-doctor-costume-revealed.html

Paul McGann is currently in New Zealand, a guest at the Armageddon Pop Culture Expo (Auckland, New Zealand) this weekend. On Saturday he appeared on a panel and revealed what is to be the 'new' costume for the Eighth Doctor.

The costume consists of a double-breasted black Naval jacket, with gold buttons. Part of of the ensemble is a courier pouch bag. However, the shirt and trousers were actually McGann's own and not part of the costume.

Also revealed is a new sonic screwdriver, courtesy of Weta Workshop, the wizards behind the effects on The Lord of the Rings. The screwdriver is similar to the one used by the current Doctor, Matt Smith, but has a wooden handle.

The revision comes some fourteen years since the original Eighth Doctor image was established for the 1996 TV Movie; this is now felt to be a little out of date and the new costume - still a work in progress - is said to be used for future promotional purposes.

No other information in known at present, but it is believed to have the blessing of the BBC.
Looks like Big Finish is closing the costuming gap between Eight and Nine?

Cool. I wonder if they'll stop using the Eighth Doctor's long hair as well (i.e. Paul's own hair in the photos instead of a wig)?

Looks like Big Finish is closing the costuming gap between Eight and Nine?

While it is a bit dissapointing that they're no longer going to be using the "Edwardian" outfit, that I think rather fit Eight's personality and the Gothic/Steam-Punk/"Verne/Wells"-ish TARDIS Interior that helped his era stand-out among the Doctors, I am curious to see what they'll do with it and how they'll explain the change. More importantly, considering the creation of a new Sonic Screwdriver prop and such a "proper" or "thought out" costume and new "look" (as opposed to just simply editing images [like the Sixth Doctor's blue ensemble], or making a very basic one just for shots from the waist-up/headshots), I wonder if this gives any credence or hope for a future appearance of Paul Mcgann in the current show, or at least more prominent "promotion" or media avenues for the character. It can't merely be just for a single photo-op and an assortment of pictures for Big Finish Audio covers, could it?

And on the topic of "Death of the Doctor," here's a few spoiler-ish tidbits/reasons to watch:
[HIDE]
1) A talking vulture gives a surprisingly moving soliloquy for the last Time Lord.

2) A UNIT base inside Mount Snowdon.

3) And wait ’til you see what they’ve arranged for the Doctor’s big send-off.

4) The story doesn’t feature the Graske, in quite an amusing way.

5) Look who is on screen when Jo first makes her presence felt. A nice touch.

6) Lis and Katy – Smith and Jones – on screen together, swapping Peladon tales.

7) It looks like Robert Mugabe may finally have met his match.

8) The Doctor’s first appearance isn’t, really. But it’s very cool.

9) An alien planet – in a quarry.

10) “It’s like someone baked you.”

11) A honeymoon planet isn’t necessarily what you think.

12) “It always hurts.”

13) Jo and The Doctor’s catch-up chat. Men shall weep. And it turns out that bit at the end of The End of Time was only the edited highlights.

14) “Intergalactic molecular streaming with just a hint of blackcurrant.”

15) Five hundred and seven.

16) Matt Smith’s delivery of the Doctor’s Big Speech. Awesome.

17) More clips than an episode of Doctor Who Confidential.

18) “It still smells the same.”

19) We find out what seven other ex-companions are up to.

20) It's a story all about the power of memories. Proustian rush guaranteed.

Also according to "Death of the Doctor" the Dalek Invasion of Earth in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End is still gone from history, and the majority of people now don't believe in aliens.

I loved the nod of continuity from the previous season's crossover, also nice to see RTD demolish EU canon too with Jo's family life (the BBC Novels paint a more grim picture for Mss Grant)

The Doctor (To Jo): "... You look like you've been baked."

Well we've got Martin Freeman(tim from The Office UK and Watson in Steven Moffat's Sherlock) as Bilbo Baggins

Now comes news Sylvester McCoy might have a role in the Hobbit too!

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/652363/sylvester_mccoy_reportedly_offered_the_hobbit_role.html

Now, here's some fine news to start the week. Over at the Doctor Who News Page at Gallifrey Base, the fine folks there are reporting that Sylvester McCoy has been offered a role in Peter Jackson's upcoming two films of The Hobbit.
McCoy has confirmed to fans attending the Armageddon Expo, which took place in Auckland, that he had been cast as Radagast The Brown in the new films.

So the tenth doctor visited everyone before "dying"

I hope Eleven makes another appearance on SJA. His first time there was practically a tribute to Tennant/Ten.

Half his dialogue was concerning his last self.

I hope Eleven makes another appearance on SJA. His first time there was practically a tribute to Tennant/Ten.

Half his dialogue was concerning his last self.

I wouldn't say all of his dialogue was related to the Tenth Doctor, in fact most was focused on his earlier incarnations, much like the rest of the story.

However from what I recall hearing, the Doctor wouldn't be appearing in the next SJA series at least, as they want it to remain for "special occasions" and perhaps focus on other parts of the Whoinverse rather then simply rely on him for ratings boosts or end up making it a series staple. Perhaps the series after that one, once Matt Smith has a series or two more under his belt to provide more to utilise for his own characterisation.

I do like the references they added which ranged from the obscure trivia, such as "Aggedor", or the playful connections such as that nice little reference when the Doctor later asks curiously "What do you mean the 'Mona Lisa'?", likely in a bit of a continuity nod or jab or at the differences of backstory between the "City of Death" and the Sarah Jane Adventures episode "Mona Lisa's Revenge".

The companion role call was clever, though I wonder if "A Cheritable Earth" is also possibly a reference to the never made Seventh Doctor episode (possibly being remade in Big Finish Audio format) "Earth Aid".

For those keeping score both episodes showed Doctor Who footage, in no particular order, from: School Reunion, Death to the Daleks, The Stolen Earth, The Time Warrior, The Masque of Mandragora, The Android Invasion, Terror of the Zygons, Genesis of the Daleks, The Monster of Peladon, Pyramids of Mars, The Hand of Fear, The Seeds of Doom, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Robot, Planet of Evil, Planet of the Daleks, The Time Monster, Carnival of Monsters, The Sea Devils, The Daemons, Frontier in Space, The Mutants, and The Curse of Peladon.

Sarah Jane Adventures clips were from: Invasion of the Bane, Revenge of the Slitheen, Eye of the Gorgon, Warriors of Kudlak, Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?, The Lost Boy, The Last Sontaran, Day of the Clown, Secrets of the Stars, The Mark of the Berserker, The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith, and The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith.

Also about the "507" bit, though it in itself was likely just in a joking manner or simply the Doctor referring to his face colour in a literal sense ("turning red" for example), Russell T Davies had this to say about it:
507 – I could not resist! I was hooting. It’ll never stick, though. That 13 lives is stuck in people’s heads. It is, isn’t it funny? Yet they only said 13 once or twice.

So don't expect it to be much of a game changer. More than likely it's just a nod to the fact that when the time comes they may need to give an explanation or hand wave to keep the series going forward, preconcieved regeneration limit or not.

In other news, Matt Smith will be a guest on The Late Show with Craig Ferguson on November 16th. Fans in Los Angeles can apply for tickets to the 3:30 pm recording from the show's website. Considering Ferguson's a huge fan, expect alot of gushing about the show. Smith will also be joined on the show by Jeff Goldblum.
