Do you need subs to enjoy Sentai?

Recently, I've been watching older Sentai series, which I managed to find subbed (I'm watching Jetman and plan to watch Maskman). But I know that many of the older series are not subbed and I really want to watch them.

The thing about this is that I always watch subbed episodes. But most of them are Raw, which means that there's a possibility that there are some things that I won't understand. So, I was wondering do you need subs to truly enjoy Sentai? If so, what specific series, if possible.

Timeranger, you do cause of its deeper story and whatnot.

Carranger... nah, you really don't. But it's even FUNNIER when you do see it subbed and finally get the other half of the jokes.

If you just need to understand what they are say, then yes. But if you just wanna watch the show, you don't need the subs. Just look at what the actors are doing during every scene you watch.

If you're really interested in them, don't let a lack of subs stop you. Enjoy the history and the difference in flavor and the bits you can understand.

But at the same time, understand that you're really only getting half of the show. Don't be all like, "this show is so boring and nothing about it makes sense." Because it's possible that it does, and you're just not hearing it.

Basically, check it out but keep an open mind.

I think it depends on the person. I used to think I wouldn't enjoy watching raws until I gave it a chance and found that I did. You'll probably have to try it for yourself before you'll know if you like it or not. When I watched threw Bioman unsubbed I didn't feel like I was missing out on any of the plot points or dialog, although the English audio dub might have had something to do with it.

I understand Japanese as I'm studying it, so I watch any Japanese shows these days w/o subs.

Well, I wish I could say one way or the other. If I could, I'd like to watch an episode in its raw form first then watch the subtitled version directly after it to see how much I picked on and how much I missed. But as mentioned, some shows just aren't as deep as others. I honestly doubt you'd need subs to enjoy Go-Onger.

But then again, the subs do have their place. They help you catch the things you missed or wouldn't have caught on your own. They help you catch the minor details you may have missed. And if you're like me, you get tired of letting your imagination do the walking. There could be scene after scene of dialogue exchanging that's integral to the plot, but without subs or knowing the language, you might as well be listening to dogs barking.

I'd also like to mention that, even though I do support official releases, there is something to be said about fansubs. The translation notes have helped me learn more about Japanese culture when I can't find that much information on my own.

I think it depends on the reason why you're watching.

If you're watching just to see the rangers transform get the mecha out and knock out the monster then no.

Trouble is without subs you won't understand most of the dialogue (unless you have some knowledge of what they're saying) and possibly lose out on some of the story. I once watched an episode of Ojamajo Doremi Naisho where the witches make an ordinary girl into a witch. After they do that a couple of them get worried looks on their faces for some reason. I didn't understand why until I found subtitles (she wanted to grant everyone else's wishes, but it was really the other witches granting them and they were worried the magic level was too high).

That I agree with. I once saw an episode in Malaysia and didn't understand what was going on.

I honestly doubt you'd need subs to enjoy Go-Onger.

I saw the episode where Sosuke gets turned into a statue (dubbed in Korean). I didn't understand what the characters were saying, but I basically got the gist of it (i.e. if Sosuke were here he'd be beating up that monster with or without powers).

I've also seen a few eps of Gaoranger (from around the Roki arc) dubbed in Malay and I got the gist of the sotry as well, though that's probably down to knowing the plot from PRWF.
