Den-O my ass... Shinkenger >'s that ****

Sakurai isn't the focus of the show, that's why people say it's a comedy. A comedy series doesn't need to be light hearted all the time after all. Most of the screentime was used for the Imajins and their interactions, not Sakurai's drama.

Sakurai Yuuto is the linchpin of the entire story. He's the reason behind Kai and the Imajins' actions. He's the cause of the chain of events that ultimately drag Ryotaro into the war with the Imajins. There wouldn't be a story without Sakurai Yuuto and his family.

The point was that most of the artifacts were based on legends, so there was no need to connect them all. Most of them already had their own individual backstory. Connecting them would just restrict the nature of the artifacts and make them all less individualized.

Only if you let it. There is no reason why one couldn't make it so that the Preciouses, despite their variety, all ultimately have a single origin. It's something that happens often enough in real life.

Or you could do away with the legend basis completely and do your own thing with the treasures. That, if anything, would allow for less restriction.

The lack of connection between the episodic enemies/plots was one of the best features of Time, Deka and Boukenger.

Considering the Londarz was behind all the criminal activity the Rangers and City Guardians dealt with, grouping Timeranger in here would be inappropriate.

Deka's setting goes well with an episodic style: it's about a police team that deals with intergalactic crime. A cop show, in other words. Cop shows can be either episodic or have an overarching plot.

Bouken on the other hand is about an organziation that collects dangerous treasures worldwide for safe keeping; a treasure-hunting story. That's not an 'ordinary' situation as is a police story. It needs a plot to back it up, especially when you have multiple factions after these treasures.

Let's go back to Jiraiya and Gingaman. In the former you have dozens of sides allying with and turning on each other, all in the search for a single powerful treasure. In the latter you have three sides all fighting each other to win a single treasure. Connectivity and an overarching plot makes the treasure hunting story more interesting and logical.

That wasn't really the premise of the series. The only one who followed that constantly was Gaja.

The Jaryuu and Ashu wanted the Preciouses for more or less the same reasons as Gajya. Dark Shadow merely wanted them for the black market.

I guess Operation Overdrive was more or less of the idea you were looking for. But I loved Boukenger I had on problems with it, but I get your pont on your take of the series.

OO's approach was more sensible as far as plot went. But it still ended up terrible.

Timeranger. And that beats Boukenger in almost every way.

Boukenger's only real plus is the cut down, for the most part, of the wackiness that has become a virtual staple of modern Sentai. Akashi, Sakura, Eiji and Souta were all likeable. Beyond that, it's a waste of potential. The episodic style it adopted does not bode well with a treasure hunting theme. Other tokus like Jiraiya and Ginga/LG execute it in a much more sensible way.

There was no connection between any of the Preciouses. The premise of collecting a bunch of random unrelated artifacts in order to dominate the world is rather weak. What would have made more sense would have been if all the Preciouses were remnants of a single ancient civilization that disappeared millennia ago, that if united would become a great power. Gordom or Lemuria could fill the role of that civilization. (If the former, then Gajya would be the primary villain and the Jaryuu and Dark Shadow would be secondary groups also chasing these treasures). And speaking of Dark Shadow, for God's sake get them some actual ninja henchmen instead of clumsy monsters, an idiot girl and a talking owl. It's very weird how most ninja-themed villain groups don't have many ninja-themed monsters. Sentai could learn a thing or two from Jiraiya.

I don't disagree with anything in that part of your message, but he still isn't the actual focus of the show.

The story is told from Ryotaro's and now the Imagin's point of view, not Sakurai's, and most of the screentime is used for them, not Sakurai's story.

In fact, without whoever built the time trains and stations, Den-O's plot wouldn't work at all, but the series didn't even delve into that part. That just shows how unimportant the backstory is for the actual show, even if it's relevant to the storyline.

Only if you let it. There is no reason why one couldn't make it so that the Preciouses, despite their variety, all ultimately have a single origin. It's something that happens often enough in real life.

They did have single thematic origin, which was important for the season finale. Humanity's dreams.

Besides, each episode was supposed to be an adventure, not parts of an adventure.

Considering the Londarz was behind all the criminal activity the Rangers and City Guardians dealt with, grouping Timeranger in here would be inappropriate.

The enemy group basically just released criminals and let them do whatever they wanted more often than not. The connection was bigger than in Deka only because rather than just supplying equipment, they freed the criminals too, but otherwise, it's about the same.

It's not a story about treasure-hunting, it's a story about "adventure". The treasures were the reason for that adventure, but they weren't the focus of the show itself. Like Boukenger's ending showed, there's no real ending to their mission. Some episodes didn't even feature any of those organizations, but just the dangerous precious itself or unrelated creatures.

If you focus on some limited artifacts derived from some specific source rather than just humanity in general, you're basically changing the theme of the show.

I get what you are saying but Yuuto is just that, the cause of the events, not the actual focus.
Let's take KR Blade for example [HIDE]Hiroshi Tennōji is the cause of everything, without him there is technically no story but he isn't actually the focus[/HIDE] just because someone caused things to happen it doesn't automatically make them the focus.

Feel free to come up with an argument defending your case.

Ryotaro is connected to the family situation. He must live with Airi's sadness and the disappearance of his brother-in-law. It's not as though he's ecstatic while Airi and the rest aren't. His point of view is as solemn as theirs.

In fact, without whoever built the time trains and stations, Den-O's plot wouldn't work at all, but the series didn't even delve into that part. That just shows how unimportant the backstory is for the actual show, even if it's relevant to the storyline.

I don't even think the trains and stations were "built" by anyone so much as they are in fact metaphysical in nature; the dimension "outside" of time where they usually habitate resembles the Persistence of Memory painting, a place where time has no meaning. Everything in it is symbolic in nature, as opposed to everything being from an actual date in the future. It would help to explain how the Stationmaster and Owner look exactly alike. (For he himself said that their likeness was only a result of the Crew's minds)

They did have single thematic origin, which was important for the season finale. Humanity's dreams.

Oh please. That works fine for symbolic purposes but makes for a very poor plotline. Just "humanity's dreams" doesn't cut it.

Besides, each episode was supposed to be an adventure, not parts of an adventure.

It's not a story about treasure-hunting, it's a story about "adventure". The treasures were the reason for that adventure, but they weren't the focus of the show itself. If you focus on some limited artifacts derived from some specific source rather than just humanity in general, you're basically changing the theme of the show.

"Adventure" is really too vague a term to be made a show motif. All superhero shows can be seen as "adventures".

And there is still the matter that all these "adventures" involved a treasure of some kind. If treasure-hunting wasn't a major part of Bouken's setting, why don't we see episodes without any Preciouses, but just "adventuring"?

In this case, changing the "theme" as you put it may have been the better option.

The enemy group basically just released criminals and let them do whatever they wanted more often than not. The connection was bigger than in Deka only because rather than just supplying equipment, they freed the criminals too, but otherwise, it's about the same.

The crimes were various, but the Londarz still had their hand in all of it. Dorunero was taking control of such a vast area that the government had to create its own taskforce in the City Guardians to save them off. They weren't all standalone, independent cases like in Deka.
