Den-O my ass... Shinkenger >'s that ****

Den-O was light-hearted, but not a comedy. The actual story itself (which sadly gets ignored by even the insufferable Den-O fanatics) is quite solemn.

Now Ryukendo, on the other hand, is a flat-out comedy.



Timeranger, Gekiranger and Shinkenger (and maybe Boukenger too, but even that pales in comparison to the other three) are probably the only Sentais of this whole decade that are worth anything. Otherwise this has been a disappointing ten years.

I guess it's all in the eyes in the beholder (Kiva was light-hearted) although theres no "light-hearted" category in film. seriously you dont see Den-O as a comedy?

As for Sentai starting from 2000:

Timeranger (flawless)

Abaranger (ok)

Dekaranger (cool)

Magiranger (Wolzardo :castlerock1

Boukenger (flawless)

Gekiranger (cool)

Go-Onger (.......no.......) "getaa, geetaa" :laugh:

I think each Sentai has their own bright spots, even for people who aren't fans, Boukenger has bored me to tears and I think it along with Go-Onger and Dekaranger are the worst shows of the last ten years or so, but I still loved Eiji's entire story and he stood out to me as a really great character in a bland series.

Timeranger, Abaranger, Magiranger, Gekiranger, and (so far) Shinkenger have been the stand out series for me, with Gaoranger, Hurricanger being just "there" and not too remarkable in any way.

AGREED! Eiji forever. He's the iconic "badass". He set the bar for the " I don't really care" rangers. He's the sempai of Gou and Chiaki.

Though I would say chiaki is really really good at it.

Eh, Shinkenger is pretty good. I find it hard to connect to any character though. No Sentai since GoGo V has been as incredible as Boukenger.

I think it's because despite Go-On's leaps in attempts at comedy compared to Den-O, Den-O is still the better of the two.

Also, even though Project.R has done loads of music for Go-On, Den-O has the 4 movies under its belt, which no other Toku series has at all. According to what we've been told, there are more coming as well.

What is Den-O about? A man who is forced to abandon his wife and unborn child in order to protect them and the timeline itself from a crazed boy and his genie army out to kill said child. His younger self is forced to abandon his life, family and friends in order to carry out the will of his older self, the protection of a future wife and daughter, with a genie as his only friend in the world. (Cue 'Lonely Kamen Rider')

Not exactly comedic, is it? And not an atypical Rider story either. But you wouldn't know that since the Taros keep hogging the spotlight, making people think Den-O is some wacky slapstick extravaganza and not something more.

No Sentai since GoGo V has been as incredible as Boukenger.

Timeranger. And that beats Boukenger in almost every way.

Boukenger's only real plus is the cut down, for the most part, of the wackiness that has become a virtual staple of modern Sentai. Akashi, Sakura, Eiji and Souta were all likeable. Beyond that, it's a waste of potential. The episodic style it adopted does not bode well with a treasure hunting theme. Other tokus like Jiraiya and Ginga/LG execute it in a much more sensible way.

There was no connection between any of the Preciouses. The premise of collecting a bunch of random unrelated artifacts in order to dominate the world is rather weak. What would have made more sense would have been if all the Preciouses were remnants of a single ancient civilization that disappeared millennia ago, that if united would become a great power. Gordom or Lemuria could fill the role of that civilization. (If the former, then Gajya would be the primary villain and the Jaryuu and Dark Shadow would be secondary groups also chasing these treasures). And speaking of Dark Shadow, for God's sake get them some actual ninja henchmen instead of clumsy monsters, an idiot girl and a talking owl. It's very weird how most ninja-themed villain groups don't have many ninja-themed monsters. Sentai could learn a thing or two from Jiraiya.

Sakurai isn't the focus of the show, that's why people say it's a comedy. A comedy series doesn't need to be light hearted all the time after all. Most of the screentime was used for the Imajins and their interactions, not Sakurai's drama.

The point was that most of the artifacts were based on legends, so there was no need to connect them all. Most of them already had their own individual backstory. Connecting them would just restrict the nature of the artifacts and make them all less individualized. The lack of connection between the episodic enemies/plots was one of the best features of Time, Deka and Boukenger.

Every Sentai ends up with large stretches of episodic plots anyway, even if it's a supposedly story centric series like Geki or Shinkenger. So, having a structure that allows variability is basically a good feature.

That wasn't really the premise of the series. The only one who followed that constantly was Gaja.

Seriously how the hell does Den-O get this popularity when Shinkenger completely blows this out of the water?.

The Imagin are extremely likable to all audiences and are incredibly easy to market and sell. Den-O's popularity really has nothing to do with the quality of the show, just the likable Imagin and how they stole the stage both crtically and financially. When you got a money train you keep it rolling.
