Could Sentai work without the Red Ranger?

removing Red from Sentai is just like asking New York to get rid of the Statue of Liberty or asking China to break down the Great Wall. you get my drift?

Exactly, it's like removing something important that help made the series. Especially if it was established in the first show (Go Rangers). While Sentai can work without a 6th Ranger, it can't without a Red Ranger.

Why is it so important for Red to be the main character and get all the attention? What would be wrong with giving equal amounts of attention, development and screen time to all the Rangers?

Because if something has been established for a long time, you can't change the format and expect everyone to accept it. It's like what happened with the Heisei Riders. Some long time fans feel that it deviated from what the original Kamen Rider stood for.

I think it goes back to Red being the leader of the team. Usually when you have a group of superheros, the leader of the team is the one that gets the most screen and gets the most development.

I do agree on your 2nd point though. I sometimes wish some of the sentai shows give more focus to the other members, but at the same time you do need someone to be the standout character.

I think have all rangers have equal share of screentime and development would be good.

It's like in the game Final Fantasy XIII. (If anyone here's played or heard about it) They say Lightning is the main character, but most of the party members get their share of screentime and development.

Like what that happened with the Heisei Riders? Hibiki, yes, but the rest?

Sentai can and does change the format. Part of the reason that western fans hate Goseiger is that it is more like a traditional Showa-era series than what we've come to expect from Sentai in the last few years

Would the little boys in Japan watch it without Red?: Hellllllll no.
Not too sure about that, there are a lot of other toku shows out there that did decently without a red warrior. ...though I suppose some of those are the kind of shows that don't put the biggest emphasis on color.

Yeah but those other toku shows aren't sentai. I mean look what happened to Ultraman when they changed the formula to much with Nexus. It failed and they went back to standard format.

I always figured this was more with the time it aired than the content of the show. I can't imagine too many kids would get up at 7:30 AM just to watch something so dark and kinda depressing.
