CGI in Toku

American productions are far worse about it I think. Something that I enjoy about tokusatsu is that many times rather than CG being the end-all be all tool it often seems to be over here it's just one in the box, used right alongside suits, models, wirework, etc. But I agree that there has been a bit of overkill with it lately. Part of that is I think is some of the concepts. If you insist on giving Kamen Rider a silly train gimmick then there are few options for pulling that off especially if it as written, it can show up anywhere.

I'd prefer it if they stick to the kind of things that CG tends to be best at. Obviously it helps with henshins and it's great for energy effects. It's lame for pyrotechnics though. With mecha I think sometimes they make it work well but it shouldn't be used as a crutch to compensate for the fact that you have your mecha design so loaded down with poweranimals that CG is the only the way the poor bastard is ever gonna move or do something besides stumble around and fire energy blasts.

CGI in Toku:
for henshins, laser weapons, blue/green screen composites, and some attacks: Sure, why not. CG henshins in particular rock, much better than the henshin crap before Megaranger. :castlerock:

for mecha, stunts, and big explosions: Please NO. :redface2: Models, dynamite, and the suit actors can do circles around CGI.

That's one of the good thing about Tokusatsu: CGI isn't the only tool in the Toku tool-box. I think Japan in general has a respect for older special effect techniques. Who here bets that, come the next Godzilla film, it'll still be a guy in a suit?

Apparently a lot of what people thought was CG actually wasn't and was done with blue(?) screen.

I don't mind some CG, but Kiva really overuses it, which becomes especially bad in any shot of a vehicle or the castle.

I'm cool with it..Why do i feel like your talking about rescue force? haha

I think my main beef with cgi in toku nowadays is the overall quality and what they deem "acceptable" quality.

Some shots here and there are fantastic...others are questionable.

Case in point, Hyper Kabuto in GSL and the odd angle in which Den-o nega jumped in Climax Deka....

I'm sure there are more but those are the two I thought of instantly when I think of "acceptable" to them. :eyebrow:

Yeah, maybe the CGI in GARO was too much...but i still think GARO is perfect, a masterpiece.

I think CGI is ok. It gives the creators the chance to do things they couldnt have done in the past. Of course, if they are gonna use it allways, they better drop the live accion and do a complete CGI production.

I agreed with your quote. Sentai series have worse CGI than Tomica Hero. Tomica Hero was made by Takara Tomy and not Toei which have producing tokusatsu series for very long time. Now Toei produced tokusatsu series that are not good anymore. I just hoped that Toho will be producing new tokusatsu series soon.
