Celebrating Super Sentai's 4-0

Because Toei did a huge celebration for Super Sentai with Gokaiger 5 years ago. Not every anniversary series needs to celebrate something monumental. In fact, Sentai doesn't need to do it until the 50th anniversary as far as I am concerned.

Zyuohger has been a great way to celebrate the 40th year because the show is the best series since Gokaiger. Sure, the villains are becoming generic and lackluster, but the show has a strong ranger cast and the writing has been pretty solid thus far.

Doggy Kruger, Sha-fu and Torin -- what a real piss-poor way of celebrating the 40th.

And, no, I wasn't expecting for Zyuohger to be another Gokaiger (even though I think 40's a bigger milestone than 35), but...Jesus, I expected more of an effort. SOMETHING of an effort. Like, at the very least, after Ninninger, I figured they'd have an appearance of someone from an animal-related team every several episodes or so. That still leaves plenty of room for Zyuohger's regular programming of below average, stupid ****, waste of airtime, ugly designs, Dullsville, wasting Susumu Terajima, heroes you hate, boring villains, boring plot nothingness.

Holy ****. Where's the Tylenol?

THANK YOU for this post because it's exactly how I feel about Zyuohger. except I don't hate the heroes. save for Leo and Amu, the rest of them has no charm. Zyuohger is a bigger embarrassment of an anniversary than Boukenger was, and that series was also crap.

Yeah, I was too excessive by saying "hating" the heroes. It's not like they're the Ninninger team, but...I just don't really feel for any of 'em. They're forgettable. Yamato's actor isn't good -- again, he's not the worst Red actor -- but he can't pull off the overzealous, bleeding heart animal lover thing, he gets cartoonish and just seems kind of insincere to me.

I think the show's just incredibly mediocre. After the atrocious Ninninger, Toei really needed to hit a homerun, and they needed to knock that ball into the heavens like Clark Kent did in Superman IV. Not only to make up for something as weak and bad as Ninninger, but especially for it being the 40th anniversary coming off of something like Ninnin. Instead we get a lazy staff being like "Hey, we can sleepwalk through this one, because even that will be more of an effort than Ninninger."

Well, no, not good enough. Just because you can tolerate Zyuohger more than Go-busters, Kyoryuger, ToQger or Ninninger, just because it's less offensive than any of those shows in its blandness, doesn't necessarily make it good.

ToQger was a rare gem for me. it's my second favourite 2010's series after Gokaiger. now I didn't like Go-Busters and Kyoryuger back then, but compared to Ninninger and Zyuohger, those two were at least watchable until the end. whereas the latter two... I just... I just can't seem to stomach any of it. I thought maybe because I've gotten used to watching the Marvel Netflix series that I just can't seem to enjoy Sentai anymore, until a friend told me that he started watching older Sentai since Ninninger. guess it's a proof that it was genuinely that bad.

It seems there's a possibility that something more is in the works now. See the latest photo in the news/spoilers section for more.

I've always wanted to see Marvelous return, but that's still a very poor excuse for a milestone celebration. unless an anniversary movie is announced, I won't be bothered.

Better than nothing. I'm having my fingers crossed that Benglay will be used to bring back past villains from other series, not just Zyuohger villains.

I just wish we got a Gorenger reboot movie the same way Ichigo got one (Having Ghost and Specter there helped, I guess?), and the Zyuohger get to play 2nd fiddle in that one. but nope, Toei treats Sentai as a Kodomo level show while KR can go all out for every age demographic. Ugh.

Or at very least, let them do a Gao VS Time, at least to give Timeranger a happy ending, for chrissakes!

See the news thread for the trailer for Super Animal Wars. It's a more Boukenger style 'characters from the last five years' affair, though probably not a single story.

IIRC Gao White has retired from the industry altogether and Gao Yellow now directs Japanese indie movies instead of acting. I can't see Toei being eager to resurrect Timeranger, what with it being the worst selling show in the franchise. If anything they'd probably look at the post-Deka shows to do a 10 Years After.

Even that looks less likely. Magiranger has at least two of the heroes retired, Gekiranger and Gokaiger have one each, Goseiger has two plus a Red they'll never get back. A Shinkenger movie would struggle without Tori Matsuzaka. Boukenger was a hit and Go-onger had a successful toyline so they might be in with a chance of a movie, otherwise looks like we're largely scuppered for any more before the next anniversary
