Bad HK flicks

Iron Monkey 2. What a joke and it has nothing to do with the first one.

Iron Monkey = :buttrock: :buttrock:

Black Panther Warriors - I've seen a king's share of really bad HK movies in my lifetime and this one is still one of the most "WTF." Totally pointless story, strange acting and inappropriate, embarrasingly bad action. Woof.

Heroic Duo.

I'm sorry but half of the time, I was laughing my ass off at the "drama"

I admit that it was a terrible movie, but I really like what they did with the fights. Especially since Donnie was suckered into the thing with the producers saying that Yuen Woo Ping was going to be the director...and then Donnie found out he wasn't.

But the director's style looks like a Kung-Fu Drama and I like that. Undercranked fights with tight shots and quick cuts. Makes the action feel more fast paced.

Nowadays many HK film fights look so damn slow cause the shoot it far away, no wide lense, normal speed...the list goes on. This is mainly due to the Hollywood influence as of late.

As for bad movies, I think that Ballistic Kiss was bad. Bad and boring. Same with Born to Defence. Dr. Wai in the Scripture with no words made me sleep as well.

But there ARE some movies that are so bad that they're good...

The Story of Ricky and Eagle Shooting Stars are perfect examples.

I think you're confused. The Hollywood influence shows in fights that ARE shot so close and edited so quickly that you can't see what's happening. I haven't seen a Hong Kong fight that was shot from "too far away" since like... Prodigal Boxer. Undercranking always has looked cheesy and fake and always will; it doesn't really make fights look more fast paced, it just makes them look embarassingly "fast."

After practicing with U'den, undercranking can really help a fight sometimes. It especially helps for people who are not used to doin' action/martial arts.

Take for example Corey Yuen. Back in the early to late 90's, he'd do lots of undercranks and quick cuts to make people like Anita Yuen and Jacky Cheung (granted that they're dancers as well which also helped them) look good in My Father is a Hero and High Risk. Even Shanon Lee looked alright in Enter the Eagles thanks to his fancy camerawork (I love dutch tilting shots).

A lot of the fights that Ohara Go has done in Death Trance, Zero Woman, Holy Land, So Soldier and Lion Maru G have been undercranked only where it counts, but still undercranked nonetheless. I totaly agree that if it's overdone, it looks silly...but Ohara showed me some of the video storyboards for Lion Maru G and a lot of the fights would've looked better off at around 22fps as he intended.

Another good example of undercranking is my demo vid. The day we filmed it, I felt like I was performing like a piece of ****, but after some undercranking and editing, the final cut looked great. Ohara Go is such a great director.

The worst IMHO? 1986's Mr. Vampire 2. It has Lam Ching Ying and Yuen Biao teaming up to take on hopping vampires. Sounds cool? It isn't. Lam and Yuen are underused and don't appear until the forty minute mark, the ever unwelcome Billy Lau has a bigger part than them and to add insult to injury the film focuses on the adventures of a child vampire. The worst scene is a fight between Lam, Biao and two adult vamps that starts off good but becomes a total crapfest when anti-vampire sedative is breathed by all four fighters and as a result everyone fights in slow-motion. To watch the fight you have to watch it while pressing the fast-forward button. If that isn't an example of a crap-tastic film I don't know what is.
