Are Anime Fans Spoiled?

Sometimes. And here's why.

That being said there is also a matter of time. Professional subbers are probably on a release schedule. Decent fan subers (should) take there time and make sure they get their **** straight. I think TV Nihon is actually a good example of this. Sure it takes them an extra three or four days, but the subs seem pretty good. I will admit I use Over-Time quite alot, but if I plan to keep a series then I get the Nihon subs.

Should they ever start releasing rider series in the U.S. I would buy the DVDs but still download the fan subs. The same goes for an anime I want. I am what I am.

Whoa. Did you just say that TV Nihon gets its stuff straight?

Well, you also seem to forget that professional subtitlers actually do this as a profession. I actually saw how MBC does the English subtitles because they screwed up that part so bad, that it was obvious. They actually take the original caption script and they change the Korean to English. That eliminates timing. That means that MBC only has translation left and a minor re-timing which is poorly done. They have more than enough time.

TV Nihon takes time to make words jiggle.

The companies that bring it to you legally can COMMUNICATE WITH and INTERACT with the Japanese creators and license holders!

They can make sure the translation reflects the story the original creator wanted to tell, they can make sure names and other things are spelled and pronounced right. They can make sure we get the release we're SUPPOSE to have. Japanese is not an easy language to translate, there are gray areas where things could be translated a number of ways, and a fansubber will NEVER have the means to give us a 100% perfect translation. 80-90% perfect at best. A fansubber/fansub team will never be in contact with the manga artists, the Japanese companies, or anyone official.

If you support fansubs over official releases in your country, I am sorry, but you are an idiot of extremely high caliber. You're basically saying you support illegal activities over helping out a company that wants to legally hook you up with your favorite material. Now, in some cases, like Tokusatsu, maybe it can't be helped. But that's no excuse to go to the extreme and support fansubbers only.

That is an excellent point which I wanted to post, but I strangely forgot. :eyebrow:

Yes. Puns actually are the bane of most translations. Talking to a creator regarding intention is the best way to fix this problem.

Not knowing the intention actually is what messes with translations the most after not knowing the structure.

Nice post.

I thought people still do that? :sly:

What about if say for example, I support the Crunchyroll TL for PSwG over the Funimation TL? Where would that leave me?

I am sure there are, and more power to them, but there are many anime fans who forget that getting an uncut release is more important than box art, simulcast, and whatever else they get upset about.

As for that other question, I'm not sure. I don't know enough about Crunchyroll. Might want to ask someone else about that. But if Crunchroll is bringing us anime legally, then that's what matters most. And if you have your choice of translations, go for whatever you want. As long as the legal source is always the first choice.

I will stream anime to see if it is worth my money first. After that I will be more then happy to buy it if it is avaliable in the U.S. with original voice overs. Does that make me spoiled or a opinionated tight wod?

Speaking of which...I need to buy Angel Beats, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Skullman. I would buy Needless...but I'm not sure if I can buy something with that many lolis...they were everywhere...

Like I said in my "essay-styled" post about CR from their early years to the current CR, it use to be damn near similar to YouTube in their early years where they had "laid-back copyright enforcement" and most of the uploaded anime/drama content ideally came from fansubs (which in other words, not legal at all).

But yes, now CR delivers their content legally

Yeah, the adblock plus doesnt really work on hulu XDD

Though if I could change something, it would be crunchyroll to allow us to watch the eps subbed on the day it airs like Hulu, and sitting through the commercials. Yes, I'm willing to sit through 30 second commercials for that.

You can do that on CR too, Blue................just let them take your money, then you can have THAT and no commericals lol

But yeah, it'd be nice if it had that as another option besides "wait a week after it was released and watch with commericals" or "pay for premium so you can watch it on the day it airs without commercials."

I don't give a damn about commercials in online streams at all (except on Hulu, those guys actually take it too damn far), just as long as I have a way to see something is all I care about.

There's some merit to this, but not every anime is streamed or simulcast. I wouldn't call fans of those shows spoiled for wanting to watch shows they...er, want to watch. If Ginga e Kickoff ever gets picked up, I would totally support it in through those other options, but until then, fansubs! Though I also think the anime industry shot itself in the foot with the sort of practices it had in the early half of the 2000s.

I suspect it is because of those "video ads" that interfere while watching a video on Hulu.

But that goes to show you that "complaining anime fans" have some selfish sense of entitlement to always have commercial-free content without knowing that someone has to pay the money to keep that content on there for them to see.

It even mentions that very fact in the Kotaku article that you posted in this thread, Keith.

As a matter of fact, this same "selfish sense of entitlement" can be seen amongst some members of the toku fandom when it relates to complaining about "why the RAW of a certain toku show wasn't uploaded on time" or "why the fansubs are being released too slow" etc.

That is the biggest issue I got, especially when some idiot in the comments was whining about how HD is the standard and anything less is a ripoff, blabbing on and on about how Japanese TV is soo much better. Completely ignores the fact about Japan and the little thing called supply and demand as well.

My response to it:

Sure there are some anime and toku that are not translated, but that is the beauty of communication. You spark the demand through discussion and promotion.

I don't seriously mind commercials in comparison to the fact that in the long run of things, I am getting a quality access [ and if paid even better] to media that I demand. The suppliers and the consumers both win as the suppliers are supported and consumers get their content.

For me, the high and mighty attitude some Japanese companies has held with their products[ Like Kamen Rider V3 and Mazinger Z as I've heard] and by holding a relatively unknown franchise [or in the case of Mazinger , a hit] to draconian license fees that repulsed licensees from the source. If they got the fact that their product is worthless unless it is given a worth [aka its a success already in said country] , perhaps anime would be still booming here, no?

The thing I have noticed with much of our anime is that the ones that come here that are icons did not have scalding licensing fees and they were promoted.
