Anyone else thinks that Jetman is somewhat overrated by the toku fandom?

I thought Jetman made its heroes more diverse/distinct from each other and made them continually clash, and that made it stand out from other Sentais.

To me, that's something that really only stands out in the early episodes -- the majority of the show's inner team clashing comes from Gai and the "love triangle." Take Gai out of it, and the team runs a lot smoother. What's supposed to make the team more unique is that, other than Ryu, they're all supposed to be just pretty average folks.

Other Sentai shows, even when they were supposed to be normal folks from all walks of life and not military or professionals, they would often be skilled at some sport or have prepared, which is supposed to explain how they quickly adapt to being a hero. Here's just a smart-ass punk, a housebound rich girl, a lazy teen and a pudgy farmer -- Inoue tries to emphasize this, but I feel like it's something that gets lost in a lot of the episodes that other writers handle.

Is my memory correct? I thought it was more like Gai likes Kaori, but Kaori likes Ryu? Then we're supposed to ignore Raita's feelings for Kaori.

Yeah. What I meant by Kaori ignoring both guys' feelings is that...in the way that Gai doesn't let up on Kaori even though she's clearly not interested, she's just as bad about not paying attention to what Ryu wants. Ryu's in denial and still stuck on Rie and wants to just be professional, but Kaori just doesn't care.

That's the thing. Jetman in general (sans Ryu) has the most inexperienced team ever in Super Sentai history (probably more so than the Gaorangers, the Kakurangers, & the Goseigers) in terms of fighting.

Yeah, but what was supposed to make the show really unique was the in-fighting amongst the team, which is mainly caused by the "love story," and not how unprofessional the team is (even though that should have factored in). The show deciding to focus so much on Gai and his schoolgirl pains made them lose sight of that, I think.

Yeah, I don't know about that. The only thing that Jetman does differently than any Sentai before it is heavily focusing on having "romances" within the team. And I think that's actually one of the show's weaker points -- it just doesn't work. Koutarou Tanaka makes Ryu such a doofus, there's Gai's nonstop hounding, and Kaori's oblivious to BOTH guys' feelings, and then there's the really out of nowhere reveal that even Raita has a thing for her.

For me, this is the problem:

Gai is in love with Kaori from Day 1.
Kaori is in love with Ryu from Day 1.
Ryu is in love with Maria from before Day 0.
Maria dies for good, Ryu suddenly loves Kaori and they get married.

That does not make any sense to me. The man had no feelings for Kaori had all, but the moment his actual love dies, he suddnely has feelings for her. MAJOR COP OUT!!!

I disagree; between Rie/Maria's death and Ryu's wedding with Kaori, three years have passed; it's not that a cop out to imagine that once Ryu had finished mourning Maria, he decided to tell to himself "life must go on" and began to have feelings for Kaori, who has loved him since she met him

I think there's supposed to be a lot of inner conflict within Ryu. Kaori's always hovering around him, and he is[/] supposed to somewhat like her, but he's still thinking of Rie and tries to bury his feelings with a sense of professionalism. For all of his talk about keeping it professional -- we know he's not that stiff, because look at how he acted on the job with Rie, in front of Odagiri no less. Rie was supposed to be a Jetman, she could have been White Swan, so there's a constant reminder. I just think there's supposed to be a lot of subtleties to the character and they needed a much better actor to convey them, and Ryu ending up with Kaori wouldn't seem so WTF.

And put some blame on the writers, too. If Inoue wasn't so in love with Gai, maybe he would have done a little more with Ryu.

What did you think of the final battle in Jetman? I thought it was pretty damn epic. My only disappointment would be they never really triumph over Radiguet. They got lucky that he had a wound on his back. Plus the part where Jet Garuda breaks through the barrier somehow, the same barrier that Great Icarus's finisher couldn't penetrate.

No MM2 is not overrated.
It's THE Mega Man game for many people.
It's the reason this game alone has more fan soundtrack remixes than any other game in the franchise combined.
It's the game that defined the franchise and one of the main reasons why many people can't accept all the newer series and why MM9 and MM10 went back to its style instead of doing something creative.

MM2 is overrated as all hell.

Naw it's not. Being really good doesn't make it overrated :anime:

I find it a whole lot more believable than Magiranger with its "we've just decided we're in love so we MUST get married RIGHT NOW!" (Yes, I know, the whole thing with N Ma - but then Ryu and Kaori could have been killed by Vyram at any time)
