Or it could just be some of us like drawing in that style? I'll be the first to admit I don't draw the most realistic people, but it's not because I can't (God knows honors art class saw to that!) It's because I like working in the style that I've developed over the years. It's my style. It appeals to my tastes, and above all when I draw something I do it because it's fun and I enjoy drawing, and if someone else likes it, that's a bonus. No offense, but I feel like this is aimed right at me because that just about sums up my way of drawing people, minus a few things.
Anyway, I just agree with mattcomics. He put everything I would say into much better words.
No no Iga, it's not pointed directed towards you, nor anyone else around here in specific. It's more for those kids who are a bit too boastful about their "anime" drawings, when they have lack of any knowledge in anatomy or anything of that sort. You should at least know a little something about anatomy, even though you don't even utilize it.
Judging from your art and your post, you have sufficient enough ability to see through this, and you've developed your own style, which is all the better.
It's really those people who try their best to make it look like an "anime", for the sole fact that they want it to be "anime", and therefore boast about their skill because it's "anime", and furthermore set the excuse for the lack of effort because of it being "anime".
Now I know that by itself could apply to others around here, and I'm not saying anything bad about these people. I don't hold personal vendettas against specific people because of this. I can only point my finger to the source, which is Anime in general.
Again, nothing is wrong with the characters/plots/etc in anime, it's just the artistic style/animation in which people try to mimic a little too much to the point where it consumes their artistic potential and restricting them to make works based on that specific style, without ever putting in their own creative sense into it. Skilled artists would utilize different sources from different areas, and develop their own style, which a lot of artists around here do anyway.
I'm not saying anime looks bad, nor am I saying "non-realistic-drawings" are bad, it's just the ignorance in seeing anime as an easy "lol-i-can-draw" kind of stance. Hell, anime has some pretty bad-ass dynamics, especially mecha. I, too, also like drawing cartoons.
Hopefully someone can read between these lines. It's tough explaining this. >_<
