Its Super Sentai Vs. Kamen Rider and I heard it comes out on April 21st. And there's a separate thread for the said movie.

He just explained why culture gap doesn't work-all you did was say that yes it did.

You're not debating-you're just asserting your opinion as if it was fact.

That's my job, stop it.

Then you need to learn how to read. I'm saying that "cultural gap" is bullshit because it does not account for the fact that one show's lack of humor in an opinion does not mean ALL do, which is the overall assumption of a cultural gap when it comes to humor.
And I said the opposite. He said that it was BECAUSE of cultural gap, and I say it's not. Duh.

[Burkion]

I was referring to KingRanger, not you.

I think it does. Do I need to say IMO after everything. If you think people do, you are sadly mistaken in that.

...you think it does what? The culture gap thing?

Why don't you give a reason for that then.

I love Japanese shows. I just made a stupid and long winded gushfest over Metalder.

If it was a culture thing, it'd pop up a lot more than just in the WACKY CRAZY comedy that drags Gokaiger (and OOOs, when it popped up. And other such shows) down.

[Lynxara]

I'm an American redneck, and Larry the Cable guy is not funny to me. Monty Python I find to be genius.

This is a false equivalency. "Culture gap" does not mean "people only find things funny if it fits the stereotype of who they are." A culture gap has nothing to do with whether or not a Southern person finds Larry the Cable Guy funny or not. Even people who have spent their entire lives in Maine could probably figure out how Larry the Cable Guy is supposed to be funny, even if they don't personally care for his routines.

The idea of a culture gap in dealing with comedy from two unrelated cultures, like say a Westerner trying to grasp Japanese comedy, is the basic fundamental of being able to recognize how the jokes are supposed to work. Japanese humor tends to be about characters wildly breaking social expectations and acting out in ways that Westerners tend to find loud, bizarre, and a bit irritating-- since most Westerners don't really understand Japanese social obligations. (And really, why should they?)

A typical Japanese viewer who detested a joke in a show like Fourze could probably still explain how the joke was supposed to work, even if just as part of explaining why they didn't like the joke. What we're dealing with in this thread is clearly a culture gap, because we're seeing a lot of posts that amount to, "This is incomprehensible, therefore it is annoying and unfunny." If you simply cannot understand what a joke from another culture is trying to be about, that's a culture gap issue.

It does! Have you ever watched a Japanese show that's not tokusatsu? Have you watched Irritating Stick, variety shows, Monzai routines? Have you read a parody manga like Yakitate!! Japan or watched a parody drama like Yuusha Yoshihiko?

The WACKY CRAZY you complain about is in all of that stuff! The punchline to a lot of monzai routines I've seen is just somebody yelling something really loud. That's the basic stereotype of Japanese humor, when comparisons of world comedy styles are made.

The idea is that since Japan is a pretty strict, button-down society, they really enjoy comedy that emphasizes absurd, farcical behavior that would be extremely impolite if someone did it in any other situation. It's supposed to be cathartic. The Japanese, like most people, like to make fun of their own cultural mores, but it's hard to recognize that is happening if you don't know what the cultural mores are to begin with.

This isn't something you'll pick up by osmosis by watching lots of tokusatsu, since tokusatsu is written in wildly unrealistic styles. Even the speech patterns of the typical tokusatsu are things no actual Japanese person would ever use in day-to-day conversation.

[Burkion]

Oh no, I understand the joke.

It's just loud and annoying and they go too far with it. More importantly, it's less that even-and it's more out of place.

What really bugged me in, say, Gokaiger VS Gavan?

Everyone's jumping away from enemies/explosions.

It's not a DRAMATIC scene, but then again it's not really any kind of scene. It's just them getting away from danger.

Don, however, is doing a silly pose while cartoon music plays in the background-and I have to stop and wonder when I started watching a parody of Sentai which isn't what I signed on for.

That is a nut shell of what bugs me-not the comedy itself-but when they insert it in scenes that doesn't NEED it and it just feels out of place in.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but could you please explain that? (I'm sure people don't go about saying "uchuu kitaaaaaaaa!" and the like but I doubt that's what you're referring to)
