In other words, people expect children's shows not to be for children, then get disappointed when it doesn't live up to their expectations? (obviously referring to Sentai and Rider here, since Garo IS for adults)
I'll be annoyed when it's more childish than it's counter part in America.
See, that's the funny thing about Power Rangers. Oh, sure, it doesn't (often) have people die or blood, or such that makes Sentai appear more mature....
But it also doesn't tend to have the 'WACKY' comedy relief...that also doubles as our core cast of characters.
I gave Gokaiger a chance, early on.
I stopped about the time when Joe learned to use an absurd number of swords, not because it sucked but....because it just didn't interest me.
The villains were stock at best, and the heroes felt more like stereotypes than characters.
I recently watched the Gokaiger finale, and was baffled at something.
Beyond the fact that Gai was a part of the team...it didn't feel like anything major had happened that couldn't be ignored or was explained in the episode itself.
After 51 episodes, it felt like NOTHING had changed up until that moment.
And the final fight was laughably easy and fitting for a show with such pathetic excuses for villains.
I say this having seen the ending of Gosieger, which I have even LESS context for...and enjoying it. The Deus Ex Machina is to roll your eyes at, but whatever, the fight was hard and well fought, victory deserved.
The Gokaiger just...spam finishers. Utterly uninspiring and hardly deserving to be the finale of the 35th aniversery.
The other thing I saw was Gokaiger VS Gavan.
....I don't know if that movie ramped it up or not, but, dear Christ on a stick, I wanted to punch Gai AND Don in the face.
They were just non stop shtick.
All the time.
Marv I did like. Pink was.......boring as ****. Yellow didn't do anything. Blue was kinda just there.
Gai and Don I actively hated.
I wanted to fast forward every time they came on because they were always doing SOMETHING stupid. Don couldn't even fall without it being WACKY AND FUNNY WITH CARTOON SOUND EFFECTS!
Am I saying I don't like comedy characters? Hell no. I'd just like it if they had a goddamn off switch.
Just because it's a kids show, doesn't mean it has to be childish.
This is supposed to be a story about super hero pirates taking on an evil empire that wants to destroy the world.
You'd think they'd do it a bit better than what we got.
Hell, I can even compare it to a kids show if you'd like, that isn't Power Rangers.
Avatar the Last Airbender. A fucking Nicktoons show.
It had its fair share of comedy-but it also had depth, good writing, good characters, and a great plot.
Why is that hard to expect from Sentai?
