2013 Rider: Kamen Rider Gaim - News/Rumors thread

Really? Not even just over Kamen Rider, you are including ALL of Toku? Mature stories? I'm not sure how to even address this without going on some long tangent about the various series that were objectively more mature.

No, I'm not including all of Toku -- just the popular forms that dominate this forum: Kamen Rider and Super Sentai.

If you want to provide the "convincing evidence" I said I've yet to see, I'm all ears (or eyes, in this case).

Despite how Gaim looks, the idea of Rider groups fighting each other for supremacy is very serious. Especially if they're playing for keeps. Which is why I compared it to a gang fight.

With that and the dance theme it's reminding me of West Side Story

So what I am hearing is that the Riders before Kabuto were silly or campy? From what I have seen and remember is that the tones of the previous Riders was far from silly or campy. There were jokes, but I would never go as far as saying they were silly.

Take Hibiki for example...not one ounce of comedy in that series. The "motifs" of the Riders that have come before never brought a laugh as loud as this series produces. If you perceive the Riders that have come before as campy that is your god given right, but some feel that the past could be taken far more seriously then the present.

People can defend this series till the cows come home, but if a certain amount of people aren't feeling this new Rider that's just how it's gonna. No one is trying to take away from your enjoyment, but the fans that aren't happy or satisfied with this have a right to be heard.

The fruit design theme is certainly goofy, visually, but there's no indication, going by that teaser, that it's weighting on the writing.

I've been saying this ever since the reveal of Gen Urobuchi as head writer: I suspect the fruit theme is the concession he made to tell a more complex/innovative story. Kids will buy the toys because they're immediately appealing: bright and fruity and collectible (what with lock seeds, 5x rider belts, and the inevitable toy versions of the battling pocket imbess monsters). With toy sales taken care of, the series can be free to be a little less conventional.

Given Urobuchi's history -- and his love of the "darker" Rider shows like Agito (the lead director of which is the lead director of Gaim)... I think we're in for some great surprises.

Now, mind you, this is purely speculation. Almost as speculative as everyone knee-jerk reacting to the ridiculous(-ly awesome!) fruit theme.

First I want to make it clear. I NEVER said Toku isn't silly on the face of it or whatever. I never said it shouldn't be, either.

I will ask you to define what you mean by Mature Plots, midnighter.

So... 4 pages later and you guys are still commenting on the fruit theme?

I really don't understand why some people are so offended by the fruit motif in Gaim. Seriously, a Rider can have animals, elements, vehicles, celestial bodies and stones as their suit motifs but not fruits (which, I must remember, is not the first time it is used)?! C'mon guys, let's grow up a little.

Just because the suit motifs are fruits (and it is not entirely fruits I might say) does it mean that it will have a silly / poor story? No. This is just to sell cool toys for the kids.

I really wonder if kids really think fruits are "cool" though... But at least the toys seem more interesting here, with the swappable armor, compared to Wizard's... nothingness. So, Gaim's toy sales probably won't fall off a cliff after the holidays, differently from Wizard's.

By "maturity of storytelling," I mean the series have...

Plots that are...

Morally complex. Structurally complex. Smart enough to have something to say about the world we live in. Respectful of the audience's intelligence.

Characters who are...

Conflicted. Flawed. Subjected to extreme hardship. Possessed of distinct voices and worldviews. Engaged in complex relationships. Willing/forced to undergo change.

By mature, I don't mean "dark," "violent," and "sexy." I mean sophisticated and well-thought-out.

And like I said, I don't see how this has changed much over the years.

Let's grow up a little? So because I feel this fruit motif is lame i'm childish?

Wow...
