Ehem... Ryotaro Nogami...

I liked Ryotaro. He was weak physically, but apart from one or two scenes that are easy to overlook, he was pretty damn strong emotionally, always willing to go for rescue, donate his body for battles and trying to be helpful and kind to people. He was an example of how soft and kind people can still be badass and looked up to. Wataru felt like an attempt at the same type of character, that just gone too far. He managed to feel weaker, more whiny and emo than Ryotaro could ever be, despite being actually competent as far as fighting goes.

Here's a little advise. If at any point your character locks himself in the room and sits in the corner in fetal position saying how everyone's is hurt because of him and how world would be better without him and other whiny emo teenager bullshit... That character cannot be saved from the fate of being absolutely unlikable piece of ****. Doesn't even matter if that was something he overcame later. If it already happened, he doesn't deserve to be main character, no matter what he does later on.

Wataru's emo-kid act was part of Kiva's overarching problem of too much drama. It's a superhero show for kids. Characters shouldn't be constantly crying and angsting and falling in lurve and acting like something out of a Victorian melodrama. I seriously hope none of that carries over into Wizard.

C'mon now LC... Kids are like that... Full of Emo..

They are as teenagers. But when they're the age of KR's target audience (around 6-11) they should be bursting with youthful joy! They don't want to switch on TV and there's this depressing guy wailing about how he should never have been born :(

Not everybody can be that happy... :anime:

While I am a big Kiva fan (and you're all hurting my feelings! Shame on you!), I definitely see the problems it has. I almost get the feeling Wizard could end up being Kiva "done right" in some way, at least going by what we've seen of the tone, atmosphere, cast and general aesthetics (Wizsword Gun jingle aside ) so far.

I liked Wataru. I think probably because I had my share of emoness back when I was 12/13.
But it's good for hero variety. Seriously. Just think of what the dude has been through. I think he's a lot closer to reality than, let's say any Rider that came after him. **** just happens because you're dragged into something you didn't ask for, and **** happens to people because it happens to you. It's pretty easy to become hopeless and feel responsible.
It's completely different for Ryoutarou, tho, because his bad luck was just bad luck, and it only happened to him.

I really respect Wataru. He came out from a shy depressive person, to someone resolute who was willing to solve his and other people's problems with his own hands.

The kid lived for the most part alone by himself in a Victorian mansion and refused to go outside due to the fact that he believed he would die from breathing in the air

If anything, I think Wataru's "emo" tendencies are derived from the fact that he's a victim of circumstance

He's not able to relate to anyone due to the fact that he's secretly a monster and the only person that can understand him is his everything he seeks to destroy and is to be engaged to his estranged half brother

Tell me, who wouldn't be an absolute emotional wreck after all that?

wow, already a heated discussion on Kamen Rider series that ended 3 years ago.

And here I am wondering whether Kougami makes the sword for Wizard. heh,
