There was an internet as early as the early 70s, I believe, and there are archives of old usenet groups of people posting about the final Star Wars movie in the original trilogy when it was new.

There wasn't really anything you could call a consumer Internet back then, but there were BBS systems. People used them in similar ways, but they were more difficult and expensive to access than the modern Internet.

I don't think you really have Usenet in its modern form until the late 80s or early 90s, when BBSes started to die out.
