Kijin Sentai Houranger (trans. Fierce God Sentai Gun/Cannon Ranger)
THEMES: japanese mythology, guns, youkai, obake. buddhism, shintoism
STORY: A mad archeologist/scientist (Dr. Arai Kichigai) releases the seal of the Makaijuu (Hell Beasts), a demon tribe that almost annihilated the human race 10,000 years ago. Shinko-Oh, their leader, seeks the Three Sacred Treasures to open the door to Makai and release his brothers, the 10 MakaiOh (Kings of Hell, he's the first), to help him in his ultimate goal, to resurrect the Mikaboshi, a dark Force that existed before the universe, reigning alone in absolute darkness and control, using the heavenly spear Amenonuhoko, to plunge the world into darkness and chaos.
Only the TenJuu (Heavenly Beasts) the four heavenly kings, powerful creatures blessed by the gods, can reseal the Makaijuu forever. It seems that they can be controlled by the TenJuuHou (Heavenly Beast Gun/Cannon, HOU also translates to retribution or punishment, once a MALA or buddhist prayer beads), an artifact used by the monk Hidesato Kurenai to seal the Makaijuu years ago, but due to the power used Hidesato dies and the TenJuuHou shatters into 6 pieces, thus sealing the true power of the TenJuu. The people saw how Hidesato sacrificed himself to save them and created an anti-demon organization, HIDESATO, to protect their land from other demon attacks.
HIDESATO have already managed to locate two pieces of the TenJuuHou, the thunder piece SUSANOO and the water piece SUIJIN. They have also discovered that only people who bears a Seikouten (Mark of Heaven) can use the pieces. They have already recruited two people: KAMINARI NANA (a 16 yr old japanese idol) and AMAMIZU DAISUKE (a 26 yr old detective). HIDESATO have also created GOD TRIGGERS (brace changers shaped like a gun's trigger, can be disguised as a wrist mala) to activate the TenJuuHou pieces.
To henshin, the ranger must shout "GOD TRIGGER!" to undisguise the changer, then the piece (piece is placed on a gun catridge like holder) must be loaded up into the GOD TRIGGER just like loading a gun then the ranger says "LOCK", then the trigger must be pulled while held up into the air, while the ranger shouts "KIJIN HENSHIN!"
EPISODE 1 PREVIEW: SHOU, a 18 yr old highschool student who always gets into trouble, gets into a fight with some seniors. After beating him badly, they lock him up in an old school building, where Shou sees an unusual altar. When he tries to touch it, a mysterious mark burns on his backhand: a mark that says "chosen". Then the mark emits a light, directing Shou into the center of the altar, where he sees a a glowing red mala bead.
Shinko-Oh, with the help of Dr. Kichigai, uses Koumajutsu to release a demon named Gaki into the city. The demon Gaki, together with youma (all demons summoned have the ability to suck the souls of the dead and turn them into youma, he also uses this technique to replenish his health), wreaks havoc and kills anyone in sight. Nana and Daisuke arrive, and with their God Triggers, henshin into HouBlue and HouYellow. Though they manage to defeat some youma, they are no match for the demon.
Meanwhile, Shou, bloody and bruised, is on his home with the bead type item that he found when some youma attack him. He manages to fend them off (he's very good at fighting, much like Yusuke Urameshi in Yuyu Hakusho), but in the distance he sees the seniors who picked on him being attacked. Shou takes a hit for one of the seniors and gets gravely injured. Sensing his end, Shou sees how the demons kill bystanders, and thinks about his family (killed by a youma years ago), regrets how he could've done something to give them justice, and if he would be given the chance, he would've done it. Suddenly, the mark on his back hand and the item he found suddenly emits a blinding tower of light, and suprisingly, his wounds heal instantly. Inside the light, he confronts a mysterious voice, who calls him "han kami"(demigod) and asks him if he wants to know what true justice means. Shou says he is not sure, but he's willing to find the answer for himself. The voice takes this as a yes, and the mark on Shou's backhand changes from "chosen" to "god". The voice then says "To know true justice, you must say my name. My name is..." Shou shouts "KAGUTSUCHI!"
HouYELLOW sees the light emitted by Shou, and goes there to investigate, leaving HouBLUE to deal with Gaki. She sees a fully transformed HouRED. HouYELLOW, surprised to see a HouRANGER without a GOD TRIGGER, contacts HIDESATO HQ and informs them about this. HQ acknowledges this and commands HouYellow to assist the new ranger. HouRED manages to defeat all youma in the area, and is helped by HouYELLOW...
STORY ARCS:
1st arc (7 episodes): Introduction and backstory of HouRED, backstory of HouYellow as an Idol and HouBlue as a detective. Suzaku debut. Kijin Henge, Kaen-Oh's debut.
2nd arc (18 episodes): The Three Sacred Treasures arc, ending in the opening of the Makai gate, release of the other 9 Makai-Oh and HouBLUE's sacrificial death to close the gate. Death of Shinko-Oh at the hands of HouRED, with a little help by Dr. Kichigai. Shoko-Oh takes older brother's place. Genbu's debut. Kijin Gattai, Tenjuu-Oh's debut.
3rd arc (3 episodes): Finding a new HouBLUE, Amamizu Daiki, Daisuke's younger brother.
HouBLUE tribute episode.
4th arc (12 episodes): The search for the Amenonuhoko spear arc. Introduction to HouBLACK and HouWHITE. HouBLACK and HouWHITE's backstory. Byakko's debut. Kijin Dai Gattai, Dai Tenjuu-Oh's debut.
5th arc (19 episodes): The Mikaboshi arc. Fall of HIDESATO. HouCRIMSON and HouSILVER'S arrival. SEIRYU's debut. SHIJIN's debut. Kijin Chou Gattai, Chou Tenjuu-Oh's debut. Kijin Saikyou Gattai, Chou ShiTenjuu-Oh. Truth behind the TenJuu and Shou and Shinji's true identities. Dr. Kichigai's true motives and betrayal. The END arc.
