Elizabeth Banks Wants To Make A New Flintstones Cartoon
When actors make the leap in front of the camera to behind it, things don’t always work out. But there are exceptions, and as it turns out, Elizabeth Banks has a wild mind and knows what will get attention. Cocaine Bear was her own idea. Now she’s interested in making a cartoon for the Fox network that takes place in Bedrock, home of the Flintstones, only 20 years removed from the original series.
Banks would play the central character, Pebbles Flintstone, now a twentysomething trying to make her way in the big, shiny, Bronze Age world. Stephen Root would voice her aging father, Fred Flintstone. Humanity discovered how to make metal late in Fred’s career and he’s unsure what to do, confused by this new technology. The show would simply be called “Bedrock,” and I should stop speaking with theoretical verbiage because this actually has a pilot deal and a full cast has been picked. It’s probably happening.
Not only is there already a canon design for an adult version of Pebbles, we’ve already seen this future in the TV movies “I Yabba Dabba Do” and “Hollyrock-A-Bye-Baby,” which aired on ABC in the 90s and were shepherded by Hanna and Barbera themselves. It was still the Stone Age in those movies. Banks is establishing her own continuity with this, and it could mean a different look for adult Pebbles (she better keep the bone in her hair).
The supporting cast includes Amy Sedaris as Wilma, Nicole Byer as Betty, Joe Lo Truglio as Barney and Manny Jacinto as Bamm-Bamm. “Bedrock” will be a joint production between Warner Bros Animation and Fox Entertainment, but there’s no word on when we could see it on the schedule.
