E3 2019: The Makers Of Dishonored Introduce Deathloop
Ever since Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Prey and the excellent Dishonored series, said they were retiring the latter in favor of something different, we wondered what their new idea was. Tonight during Bethesda’s E3 conference, they rolled out the first trailer for…Deathloop.
The premise, as best as we can understand it: Two assassins, Colt and Julianna, wind up on a remote island called Blackreef. The island has all sorts of dangers, but Colt’s biggest problem is that his day keeps resetting and keeping him from making any progress escaping the island. He’s trapped in a time loop, and the trailer suggests the only way to break it….is to find and assassinate Julianna. Julianna seems to have the same goal, but HER mission is to PRESERVE the time loop.
DEATHLOOP” transports players to the lawless island of Blackreef in an eternal struggle between two extraordinary assassins. Explore stunning environments and meticulously designed levels in an immersive gameplay experience that lets you approach every situation any way you like. Hunt down targets all over the island in an effort to put an end to the cycle once and for all, and remember, if at first you don’t succeed… die, die again.
There have been a lot of time loop stories done in various media lately, especially in video games — we just saw another one today in XBox’s “Twelve Minutes.” What’s most important, though, isn’t if the idea is 100% original (technically everything has been done before) but the execution of the concept. And Deathloop looks like a lot of fun, preserving the freedom of gameplay that made Dishonored a hit.
Deathloop unfortunately doesn’t have a release date, so we may be waiting a while before we get to play it. The trailer bears no mention of which consoles will be getting the game. Maybe Project Scarlett if it takes too long.
