If you have yet to be introduced to the growing trend of escape rooms, they’re enclosures where groups of people are locked into a room for one hour and have to search the place for clues to escape. It’s not unlike living a video game, which is a big part of the appeal (plus, the worst that can happen is failing to solve the puzzle before time expires….then you’re just let out, with your punishment being failure).
Nintendo’s Zelda series would fit the escape room concept like a glove, wouldn’t it? They thought so as well, and teamed up with SCRAP (one of the companies that popularized the escape room trend) to introduce Defenders of the Triforce, a real-life dungeon crawler that will tour eight cities across the US.
Defenders of the Triforce will be different than escape rooms that have been tried in the past. For one thing, it won’t be a ROOM…more like a large area, with multiple teams competing to find the solution at the same time. These teams will be in groups of six. For once, they thought about how popular this would be and made their plans accordingly.
Just like in a Zelda game, you’ll be able to find helpful items in treasure chests, which will help you break into the next area where a different item is hidden…and so forth until one team wins. Along the way you’ll get help from Gorons, Zoras and Kokiri (though don’t count on much from Mido).
“At Nintendo, we’re always looking for ways to offer new experiences for all of our fans, and expose our characters and franchises to new audiences,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Partnering with SCRAP allows us to offer a new perspective on this legendary series.”
“We wanted to make sure ‘Defenders of the Triforce’ felt as authentic as possible,” said Doc Preuss, Real Escape Game Producer for SCRAP. “Fans of The Legend of Zelda series will adore the tour and won’t want to miss it.”
The Defenders of the Triforce puzzle tour is currently only scheduled for an eight-city stop. Now’s the time to weep when you find out none of these places are anywhere near you…..
