Unpredictable Family

Unpredictable Family ~ Do You Know Who Your Relatives Are?

Unpredictable Family” (also titled “Bumpy Family”) is a Korean Comedy-Family-Drama series, that has 100+ episodes, and the first episode was released in September 2023. It is streaming free on Viki and KOCOWA+.

Can Parents Who Went Through a Bitter Divorce Become In-laws?

In “Unpredictable Family”, the two main characters are Yoo Eun-Sung, an aspiring actress, who refuses to give up on her dreams no matter how many times she fails auditions; and Kang Sun-Woo, a talented and promising film director who started his career at age 17. These two characters are surrounded by a bunch of likable, sometimes quirky people who comprise their circle of family and friends.

Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage can complicate family ties.

The ties get even more complicated when family members disappear. If or when they reappear and paths get crossed, the parties who meet each other may not even know they have a familial connection.

Sim Jung-Ae caught her husband, Yoo Dong-Goo, in a compromising situation with another woman. He insisted that he was confused about his feelings for the woman, Go Chun-Young, but he did not have an affair with her. Sim Jung-Ae did not believe a word he said and demanded a divorce. According to her understanding, Yoo Dong-Goo, agreed to allow the divorce and to allow her to raise their two children: Yoo Eun-A and Yoo Eun-Hyeok. He agreed but then he left with the two kids, and also married Go Chun-Young, the woman he said he did not have an affair with.

Sim Jung-Ae was distressed by the double betrayal. First her marriage bond was broken because of “suspected” infidelity and then her husband broke the maternal bond between her and her children by stealing them away. She has spent 30 years trying to find them. In the meantime, she remarried. Even though she had children from her second marriage, she never stopped looking for her children from her first marriage.

She believes her ex-husband is in the Philippines when all the while he is in South Korea and even living in the same city she lives in. Her children are close by and can be reached, but she does not even know it because her she’s been looking in all the wrong places trying to find them.

The complications begin to arise when the adult children meet each other and form relationships without realizing that their parents have been divorced and that they are a result of BEFORE and AFTER unions. While the siblings may be willing to get along with each other, their parents still have bitterness between them and might not be willing to reconcile.

Follow the trail if you can.

  • Eun Sung is the daughter of Yoo Dong-Goo and Go Chun-Young, a remarriage
  • Her half-siblings, Yoo Eun-A and Yoo Eun-Hyeok, are the children of Yoo Dong-Goo and Sim Jung-Ae, the first marriage that ended in divorce

Eun Sung, Eun-A, and Eun-Hyeok have the same father but NOT the same mother

  • Sim Jung-Ae remarried Kang Ki-Seok after divorcing Yoo Dong-Goo.
  • Kang Sun-Woo and Kang Sun-Joo are the children of Sim Jung-Ae and Kang Ki-Seok, a remarriage

Kang Sun-Woo and Kang Sun-Joo AND Eun-A and Eun-Hyeok have the same mother, but NOT the same father

  • Kang Sun-Joo is Eun Sung’s closest friend
  • Kang Sun-Woo, Kang Sun-Joo’s brother, is the man Eun Sung falls in love with

With those kinds of family ties, things can definitely become UNPREDICTABLE.

Main Characters:

  • Yoo Eun-Sung (played by Nam Sang-Ji, “Lucid Dream”)
  • Kang Sun-Woo (played by Lee Do-Gyeom)

Where to Watch

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is 7 out of 10 stars. “Unpredictable Family” has 100+ short episodes (about 30 minutes) and is a lighthearted comedy that reminds you of those old comedy TV shows on MeTV (America’s #1 Classic Television Network), mixed with a silly soap opera vibe. It is not to be taken seriously. If you can watch “The Andy Griffith Show” or “The Brady Bunch”, then you can watch “Unpredictable Family”.

Having followed Lee Do Gyeom's career for a while now, it's fascinating to see him take on his first leading role in "Unpredictable Family." He brings such depth and nuance to his character, Kang Seon Woo. And Nam Sang Ji's portrayal of Yoo Eun Seong is simply captivating. The way they navigate through the complexities of family dynamics is both relatable and poignant. Director Kim Sung Keun truly knows how to bring out the best in his cast, making this series a must-watch for any K-drama enthusiast.

From the intricate plot twists to the stellar performances by the cast, every episode leaves you craving for more. And let me tell you, Kang Da Bin as Yoo Eun Hyeok? Absolute scene-stealer! His portrayal of the determined detective adds such depth to the storyline. Trust me, once you start watching, you won't be able to stop!

So, I finally got around to watching "Unpredictable Family" last weekend, and I gotta say, it's pretty addictive. The way they weave together the different family dynamics is quite impressive. Plus, the comedic moments are spot-on. It's the perfect show to unwind with after a long day. I might not be fully caught up yet, but I'm definitely enjoying watching it.

As someone who's seen their fair share of K-dramas, I have to say, "Unpredictable Family" offers a unique take on the genre. The exploration of complex family relationships is commendable, and the performances by the cast are solid. However, there are certain plot points that feel a bit contrived, and some character motivations seem a tad unrealistic. Overall, it's worth a watch if you're in the mood for something different, but don't expect it to reinvent the wheel.

Okay, can we just talk about the emotional chaos that is "Unpredictable Family"? I mean, the heart-wrenching moments had me reaching for the tissues one minute, and then I was laughing out loud the next. It's like a whirlwind of feels, and I'm here for every single moment of it. And don't even get me started on the chemistry between the leads! Lee Do Gyeom and Nam Sang Ji? Absolute perfection!

"Unpredictable Family" is a show that can easily catch you off guard. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it at first, but before I knew it, I was completely engrossed in the lives of the characters. It's has the perfect amount of humor and drama, and the actors do a great job of giving their parts life. Thus, give it a try if you're searching for something to binge-watch on a leisurely Sunday afternoon. You're going to love it!

Honestly, "Unpredictable Family" felt like a tangled mess of clichés to me. The whole divorced parents, secret siblings drama has been done to death in K-dramas, and this one didn't bring anything new to the table. Plus, I found some of the characters overly melodramatic, which made it hard for me to take the story seriously. If you're looking for something original, I'd suggest giving this one a pass.I don't like to be too critical, but "Unpredictable Family" left me feeling pretty underwhelmed. The storyline felt formulaic, and I found myself predicting plot twists way before they happened. And while the cast did their best with the material they were given, I couldn't help but feel like something was missing. Overall, it's not the worst K-drama I've seen, but it's far from being memorable in my book.

I'm usually a sucker for K-dramas, but "Unpredictable Family" just didn't do it for me. The storyline felt disjointed, jumping from one subplot to another without much coherence. And don't even get me started on the over-the-top acting! It's like the actors were trying to outdo each other in the melodrama department. Needless to say, I won't be adding this one to my list of favorites anytime soon. While "Unpredictable Family" had its moments, I couldn't shake the feeling that it was trying too hard to be quirky and unconventional. The whole premise felt contrived, and the characters lacked depth, which made it hard for me to care about their struggles. It's not the worst K-drama out there, but it definitely left me wanting more in terms of originality and substance.
