The soundtrack for the 1974 animated “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown” television special will finally be released this September. Moreover, the 21-track album will feature the complete original score by composer Vince Guaraldi.

It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown Soundtrack Will Finally Be Released
Peanuts soundtracks are basically the stuff of legends. That’s because you’ll never find a bad one among them. Even the worst Peanuts soundtracks are at least decent enough for everyday listening.
Therefore, it’s a very special occasion when one of them gets released, whether it’s for a new film or a remaster of a classic. However, not every Peanuts soundtrack was so lucky, for one reason or another.
That was the case for the soundtrack for the classic 1974 animated television special “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown”, until now. That’s because Lee Mendelson Film Productions will finally release the previously unreleased soundtrack this September. The release was originally set for August 21, 2026, but the date has since moved: the retailer-exclusive vinyl variants arrive September 11, 2026, and the standard black LP, CD, and digital versions follow on September 18, 2026.
Moreover, the new album will feature four additional bonus tracks along with the film’s original score by Vince Guaraldi. But wait! There’s more! The album will also feature two additional jazz remixes with Ron McClure on bass.
This “Extended Edition” album will also drop digitally and physically. As a result, you’ll find it on both CD and vinyl LP. However, you won’t need a physical copy to have all 21 tracks since they’ll all be available digitally as well.
As for those vinyl variants, there will be three: Mysterious Magenta, exclusive to Urban Outfitters, Mystifying Teal, exclusive to Barnes & Noble, and Magnifying Glass Clear at participating independent record shops. All of the vinyl editions are pressed on BioVinyl as well.
Why It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown Soundtrack Still Matters
As I have noted above, there’s no such thing as a bad Peanuts special, and “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown” is just one example.
The CBS animated special aired on February 1, 1974, right in the middle of the franchise’s golden era. In other words, it arrived after the franchise proved it could explore stories beyond the usual holidays, school settings, and sports comedies, and favor more character-driven mini-dramas.
For instance, this time around it decided to explore the wonderful world of film noir and mystery. And in doing so, it introduced us to Detective Snoopy, otherwise known as Snoopy Holmes, as he attempted to solve the mystery of a missing bird’s nest.
Along the way, the special revealed how much personality the Peanuts team could pack into the show’s simple staging, restrained movement, and carefully timed expressions. And all of it was supported by a wonderful soundtrack score from the then-already legendary Guaraldi.
Vince Guaraldi Gave It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown a Funkier Peanuts Sound
Now, Guaraldi’s Peanuts work often featured warm classical music centered around the piano, A Charlie Brown Christmas, for example. However, for “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown”, Guaraldi went for something jazzier, funkier, and more modern.
The result was an electronic jazz-funk vibe featuring a wah-wah guitar, clavinet, piano, electric piano, and rhythm-section grooves. And it’s that tone shift that made the special all the more special, especially to soundtrack enthusiasts.
It’s remarkably beautiful, too. That’s because it nicely accentuated the momentum, misdirection, and swagger of the show’s mystery story, all the while still feeling like Peanuts music.
As a result, it gave Snoopy’s investigations the emotional vocabulary they needed without mocking them. And in doing so, it assured you that you were still in Charles M. Schulz’s cozy, philosophical sandbox universe.
However, it was never released during Guaraldi’s lifetime.
Despite everything going for it, the “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown” Soundtrack was never released, and we can only speculate why. Maybe they thought it wasn’t necessary since it was a children’s show, even though kids would have made their parents buy it either way.
Remember, this was the 70s. They didn’t have the internet. Music apps and digital distribution weren’t a thing yet, either. The only way they could have reasonably listened to music was to buy it on either vinyl or cassettes.
Thus, Peanuts fans had no way to listen to the soundtrack other than by watching the special whenever it aired. And I mean whenever it aired, since home video wasn’t a thing yet either.
But now, after all that, we can finally listen to the music on our own terms, some 52 years later. And it’s all thanks to the upcoming Extended Edition album.
However, I wonder why they are calling it an “extended edition”. Sure, the album will feature bonus tracks, but there wasn’t a “regular edition” to extend.
What You Can Expect from It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown Extended Edition Soundtrack
Either way, as I have said earlier, the soundtrack will feature 21 tracks, totaling about 42 minutes of music. The first 15 of those tracks will feature Guaraldi’s score, while the rest will be the bonus “mystery session” tracks.
Just note that the split is more important for the LP release, since that’s also how the two sides were divided. The digital and CD releases will each have a single continuous playlist instead.
Either way, both physical releases were designed with fans in mind. That’s because the packaging will feature an Easter egg puzzle where you must find all the tiny Peppermint Patty robbers. It will also come with a small Snoopy Holmes magnifying glass to help you solve the puzzle, along with a few other surprises.
And here’s the track list, for your convenience:
- Little Birdie
- Mystery Theme / Mystery Theme (Reprise)
- It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown
- Sassy Sally / It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown (Reprise)
- Mystery Theme (2nd Reprise)

- Autumn Leaves (Take 1)
- Billie’s Bounce (Take 2)
They’re also releasing a single.
However, that’s not all the Snoopy goodness Lee Mendelson and Peanuts Worldwide are dropping on us. That’s because they’re also releasing the “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown” main title theme as a single on September 18, 2026, the same day the album gets its wide release.
And that also means we’re likely to have an official music video for it, given their other recent Peanuts soundtrack releases.
Final Thoughts
Either way, this soundtrack release is going to be a treat. Sure, we may not have any nostalgia for it. But it should be on your radar regardless, if for nothing other than its historical context.
That’s because the Guaraldi Peanuts catalog has been steadily experiencing a revival of sorts lately. Moreover, each new restored soundtrack release preserves more of that classic television music legacy that defined that generation. And now, that collection includes the “It’s A Mystery, Charlie Brown” soundtrack.
But that’s just my take. Now, what’s yours?
