Trailer Released For James Wan’s Malignant
When James Wan talks, people listen. Ever since his striking directorial debut with Saw, Wan has established himself as a horror master, creating the Conjuring franchise and other movies like Insidious. Now he’s about to hit us with his latest, a supernatural thriller called Malignant.
Madison Mitchell is having spooky dreams. She sees someone getting brutally murdered, and then the next morning, she turns on her TV and hears about that very murder! She isn’t sure what’s happening, but it likely has something to do with Gabriel, the imaginary friend she had as a child…who may not have been so imaginary after all. The spirit seems like the obvious culprit, but she has to wonder if the real-world murderer is HER, given that Gabriel has begin possessing her body at rude times. To top things off, Madison has a little daughter, whom it’s going to become increasingly harder to protect against Gabriel.
There is more to the story than this, but Wan isn’t showing all his cards just yet. “It’s horror, but it’s also a traditional thriller. It’s psychological, it’s serial killer, but it’s also potentially a monster movie,” he told IGN. Wan won’t explain the title either, but he will say this: “I’m a big fan of titles that have multiple meanings to it. With Malignant, I just felt like this title really encompasses the tone of the film, the subject matter, which actually has a fair bit of medical horror attached to it. So it just felt appropriate.”
Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis as Madison, Maddie Hasson as her sister, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jacqueline McKenzie and Jake Abel. It opens in theaters and on HBO Max September 10.
