Soma has been available to players for a long time, as long as you owned a relatively powerful PC or PlayStation 4. Xbox One players have had to wait until now to get their hands on the horror title. The issue is whether the game holds up on this platform and if it was worth the rather long wait. The game largely shares the same mechanics of Frictional Games previous, and highly acclaimed, title Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The player is not really expected to fight enemies but try to hide from them. The real major difference between the two games is that Soma has had a dramatic shift in setting to an underwater facility. Antihuman is not a movie about nihilism, nor is it a biography about George Carlin. Antihuman is a movie that, although its’ billed as a horror movie like Resident Evil, is more of a psychological horror piece. The movie, set in England, centers around Maggie (Anya Korzun), a dying young woman who is hoping to find something at her childhood home, whether it’s peace of mind or the truth about her late mother. Setting out with her friend Peggy (Danielle Arden), as well as the more-reluctant Avery (Katie Keight) and Catarina (Kathryn Goldsmith), Maggie returns to her home, which actually turns out to be an old mental hospital. Meeting a former worker at the hospital named Walker (Andrew Jardine), Maggie tells of the apocalyptic visions she’s had, and it’s difficult for everyone to tell whether she’s losing her mind as she’s dying or preparing for a major change. The survival horror genre has gone through a big revival in the last few years after seemingly disappearing from the landscape completely. It is a genre where smaller developers, like Bloober Team, have been able to experiment and release games such as Layers of Fear. Taking everything they learned from that release, the studio has now moved to a cyberpunk setting with their latest release Observer. Taking place some 70 years in the future, it sees players take on the role of Detective Daniel Lazarski in a Blade Runner inspired version of Poland. For the past two decades there have been loud arguments from certain sections of the media claiming that video games, more than any other type of entertainment, have a link to real-life violence. They have blamed mass shootings like the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 on games such as Doom and Grand Theft Auto. Throughout that time though, there has been little to no evidence of such a link despite a large number of studies investigating the relationship between whether playing video games can make a person more aggressive and more likely to be violent. Yesterday, the American Psychological Association released a new paper that they claimed showed that there was a definitive link. The Task Force on Violent Media available on the APA website states that, “The research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and increases in aggressive behaviour, aggressive cognitions and aggressive affect, and decreases in pro-social behaviour, empathy and sensitivity to aggression.” The publication led to more news outlets claiming that there was
