Harry Shearer not leaving The Simpsons after all

Good news has arrived for all fans of The Simpsons after it was confirmed by the official Twitter account of the show that all principle cast members, including Harry Shearer, had signed new contracts. This means that the Spinal Tap member would not be giving up his roles on the cartoon, something that Mr. Burns would probably describe as, “Excellent.” We are extremely pleased to announce that all principal cast members of #TheSimpsons have now been signed. The Simpsons Showrunner Al Jean is Confused by Harry Shearer’s Exit From the Series

When it comes to shows lasting a long time, an inevitable truth is that some characters will either move on or be retired in one form or another. For cartoons, that’s true to an extent, but voice actors can honestly go on for awhile as long as they’re able to speak (so to speak). For The Simpsons, there’s a really weird situation going on with one of their main series voice-over actors, Harry Shearer. As reported earlier by PopGeeks, Shearer has apparently left the show, which was a big surprise to showrunner Al Jean for numerous reasons. He told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m a little baffled. The other five [voice stars] signed on May 1 and we offered him the same contract everybody else got offered, but he didn’t sign so we started reading like we were going to and [were] waiting to see if he wanted to come back or not. Harry Shearer Leaving The Simpsons

The voice actor behind Ned Flanders, Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Principal Skinner, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibbert, Scratchy and Lenny (NOT LENNY!), and probably many others that don’t come to mind at the moment, has tweeted that contract negotiations between him and Fox have fallen through and he is now leaving the series after 26 years. “From James L. Brooks’ lawyer: ‘Show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best.’ This because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best.” The Simpsons was recently announced to have gained a two-season renewal contract. This contract would have happened sooner if negotiations with Shearer had not stalled the process. At this point all other cast members have signed on; Harry, sadly, chose not to.
