Iron Studios is a collectible figurine maker out of Brazil. They’ve specialized in detailed superhero-related figures: DC and Marvel heroes are all over their website, available for purchase in dynamic poses. Today on the San Diego Comic-Con show floor, they revealed something no one expected….
Check them out. It’s the cast of the Dungeons and Dragons TV show, faithfully rendered in 3D. Please appreciate that Popgeeks probably has the only JPEG up online for this set because the company itself hasn’t put anything on their website about it. We had to haphazardly stitch together the above splash image from the 180-degree rotation video of the display — the only evidence so far this exists.
Despite what they say, there aren’t many kiddie TV shows from the 1980s that hold up to modern standards. The original Dungeons and Dragons cartoon is one of the fortunate few. The series pulled off the miracle of actually establishing tension and stakes in a highly sanitized industry. They were pulled into Gygax’s world via malfunctioning rollercoaster, but compared to the show’s competition at the time, it sure wasn’t Care-A-Lot. These kids were really in trouble!
I guess it helped that D&D was a new (read: scary) product, and just about every helicopter mom had heard the horror stories about its corruptive influence, so the show was kind of damned no matter what it did. The producers went for broke and made an episode where the kids consider killing Venger.
We suspect these figures will move into production soon. We’ll update you later if we hear of a price and release date.
