Peacock Announces Crystal Lake, A Friday The 13th TV Series
Tired of unnecessary prequels to popular IP? Too bad, here comes another. Peacock has announced they’re developing a horror series called Crystal Lake that is about the main setting for Friday the 13th BEFORE Jason entered the picture.
And we do mean before. As everyone knows by now, the killer in the original movie wasn’t Jason, but his mother. Jason was only revealed to be alive in the surprise ending. But there will be no surprise appearances or even a glimpse, for even if the producers WANTED to use Jason, they cannot. The rights to the Friday the 13th series are split between two people, one who owns the original movie and another who holds rights to its sequels. It gets more complicated from there, but what it basically means is that Crystal Lake can never have Jason.
Sounds like a disaster in the making, right? ….Not quite. There’s the matter of the parties involved — all very talented people. Brian Fuller, who made the memorable Hannibal (itself a prequel series) is set up to be showrunner and A24 is handing the whole production. Those’d be the guys whose track record so far leans far more toward hit than miss.
There’s also the fact that Friday the 13th was already a TV series once (back in the 80s when the brand was new) and it had nothing to do with ANY element from the films, yet it managed to last three seasons and become a cult classic. So we can’t write off Crystal Lake so easily and we have no idea what to expect from it. Here’s hoping for the best.
